Yes, you could do this....

You will need to pick the right diode for the job.

But what brings this on? 

I've had almost no PS failures that were not part of some major damage.  (lightning, power co. problem...  480V on 110V line)

If you are having many PS failures, you might look at the load vs the PS rating.  Don't forget the radio cards...
