The GNU Coding Standards[1] are general guidelines whose purpose is to
make the GNU system clean, consistent and easy to install; it's also
a guide to writing portable, robust and reliable programs.

The source code formatting rules are just a fraction of that.
Currently, they are not requirements, although strongly encouraged by
the GNU project.

Other important guidelines are that the program should support a GNU
build system (Window Maker already does) and, ideally, have a manual
written in GNU Texinfo.

The GNU Coding Standards is a rather extensive guide. The forthcoming
GNU maintainer should not feel pressured to read and comply to it
altogether beforehand --- we will tell you if something relevant is
incorrect or missing, so you can make the package increasingly
compliant on request.
