It looks as though there is a virtual package providing the smbfs functions

Maybe worth a try.

I got smbfs to install and work!
I assumed either the Sid or Weezy repositories have a newer smbfs
package but no correspondingly newer cifs-utils package, so I went into
the Synaptic Package Manager and dropped all repositories except for
Squeeze. I also left references to Sid and Wheezy but dropped the 'main'
repository so that the Synaptic Package Manager wouldn't freak out. A
search for cifs-utils now turned up the version smbfs was expecting and
both installed along with samba-common.
Just make sure you go back and reset the repositories back to their
original settings when done and everything should work as expected ...
it did for me.
