6.0.7 is the latest Debian. VMware tools should have pre-built modules
for this. If you are trying to install on Debian Testing or Unstable.
I'd hit up the VMware forums for help. They would probably take interest
in versions of Debian that have not been released yet, just to keep
their own tools up to date.
