A further query on the longdesc attribute.

Is there any reason why I couldn’t use it on a Flash animation?

Because <object> doesn't suck as much as <img> (from a design point of view, browser implementations rather wreck the idea).

<object data="my.swf">
  <p>Detailed alternative content</p>
<p>Including multiple paragraphs and <img src="foo.jpeg" alt="images" longdesc="foo.jpeg.html"></p>
</object>

Since object is designed to allow rich alternative content, it shouldn't see a longdesc attribute.
