The null bytes are probably a result of this on line 140 of detectmsk144.f90:
   lines=char(0)

which was a recent change motivated by trying to track this problem down. I 
should note that have made some significant changes since yesterday, 
eliminating msk144dt.f90 and syncmsk144.f90 in factor of detectmsk144.f90, and 
the problem has persisted across this change.
