I routinely use "stow"; I did not want to confuse the issue.

That strategy started the problem.

And, it now looks as though replacing version 2.7a by version 2.8c will
not solve it.

For the record, re-installing wwwoffle and dispensing with the attempts
to copy the RedHat cache to Debian solved the problem.  WWWOFFLE now
works - as it has done for more than 3 years.

But, at least I have learned a new word - "backport"!
