Further to Luke's question there is a very interesting article in July
Gliding Australia on Flight Computers and what is truly essential data
rather than data adding confusion.
My view is that a cheap [<$100] Chinese PNA/GPS running XCSoar is very
useful. The glider has a finely tuned vario, altimeter and ASI [so the
XCSoar need not provide these].
In a simple vario it would be very nice to provide all the PNA XCSoar needs
viz.,
1. A pitot input in a suitable message format, and
2. 5 volts to ensure the internal PNA battery lasts 8 hours, and
3. All cockpits need to know status of 12 volt supply voltage so
put a meter in the Vario as well.
Is there a vario that provides a Pitot bitstream and 5 volts to a vario
front USB output? ... Mike.

PS. To have a more integrated cockpit these days, FLARM is a
consideration that should be integrated into the data stream. I know several
IOIO boxes and regulated power boxes and wires achieve all the above. A
design challenge [for the simple vario?] would be to be integrated Pitot,
FLARM, compass, [and even ADSB] into each/all of the above boxes. You may
have even more requirements? That is starting to sound and cost like a
LX7007 CB at $4,300 US?

Subject: [Xcsoar-user] Vario recommendations
Hi All,
Looking to purchase a new Vario. I've got one spare 80mm Hole for it.
I'd like to get one with:
> Audio
> Digital Averager
> Data output for XCSoar
So i'm wondering if there are any vario's that are particuarly good as a
data source for XCSoar. The plan would be to feed it in via a IOIO Board
setup.
Thanks
Luke
