I get also those warnings if I put a dot before closing the \so command,
but the text is printed.
To me it's clear from this that soul is not meant to be used with XeTeX.
LuaLaTeX doesn't work at all with soul (or soulutf8), but XeTeX seems to
work under some circumstances.
