Not to defend windows against linux or other os but it seams thit is = not exclusively a 'windows' related issue.
My windows/xmail couple work fine with hotmail/msn, started with = windows 2000 sp0/xmail 0.65 up to windows 2000 sp4/xmail 1.21 ... and always = with windows own dns servers ... If this is a 'windows' problem it is in the specific windows = installation (conflics, bad dll's, ...). For your present request on linux, as the error is "417 Temporary = delivery error", this is not a fatal delivery error, so xmail will try later. = Let xmail do the job until you receive a fatal NoDeliveryReport from your = xmail server. 'Time out' could be du to hotmail servers too busy, temporary network bandwidth full on internet, no more disk space at hotmail, (or grey = list ?) .... Here it is strange that your isp can deliver to hotmail the same time = you can't directly. If you let xmail doing the 'normal' retries, do you finaly receive a = fatal NDR (5xx code) ? If yes the tests to run are exactly the same used in the 'windows' = problem with hotmail : - Verify dns records for your xmail linux server, keep in mind that = hotmail used multiple tests to fight spams (don't know exacts tests but could = be rdns checks, spf records checks, black lists, grey lists, ...) - Verify if your ip is 'black lists' - Try to simulate a smtp session from the xmail linux server to hotmail = and see if result is the same then try from another pc to compare - Try to run tcpdump to get traces of the smtp sessions with hotmail .. .. Send any informations you can get on the list. More informations you = send, more help you get ;-) Francis -----Message d'origine----- De : Joe Harrell [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Envoy=E9 : jeudi 7 avril 2005 07:29 =C0 : xmail@xmailserver.org Objet : [xmail] Re: Problems with hotmail.com Not intending to start this thread up again, but everything I've read on the subject says this is somehow Windows related but I'm having a similar problem delivering to hotmail.com and msn.com, but my XMail (1.20) server is on Linux . I was getting this error as it cycles through the MX's. ErrCode =3D -5 ErrString =3D Timeout error SMAIL SMTP-Send MX =3D "mx4.hotmail.com." SMTP =3D "sougent.com" From = =3D "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" To =3D "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" Failed ! SMTP-Error =3D "417 Temporary delivery error" SMTP-Server =3D "mx4.hotmail.com." I've worked around it by forwarding all mail to hotmail or MSN through my ISP but it'd be nice to know what's going on.
