I have been experimenting with something here and think I've gotten off on the wrong
track somehow.

As I've posted before, the "timer based audio" that xmame seems to insist on using
with this motherboard's built-in soundchip creates a problem for me when I try to
pause or exit a game.

Therefore, I decided to have a whack at using ESOUND to see if I can avoid this "timer
based audio" stuff.

I "assume" that ESOUND is the esd that is referenced in Gnome, right? (If I'm wrong
here, then that's where I've gone wrong.)

I have esd loaded and running (apparently), and esdctl allinfo gives me this:

server version = 0
server format = 0x00000021
server rate = 44100

esdctl serverinfo says exactly the same thing.
esdctl standbymode says "server is on autostandby".

I've compiled xmame with ESOUND enabled, and xmame.x11 -ldp says:

Digital sound plugins:
oss Open Sound System DSP plugin
esound Esound DSP plugin

xmame.x11 -lmp says:
Sound mixer plugins:
oss Open Sound System mixer plugin

Hmm. No esound there. Is this a problem?

Anyway, I now try to run pacman.

xmame.x11 -dp esound pacman

After the usual write-up, I get this:

Using 16bpp video mode
Game uses 16 colors
Can't resolve host name "/dev/dsp"!
error: esound open stream failed

Then the game loads and runs, without sound. On the positive side, it exits properly
when I hit ESC (but the, it also exits properly when I use the -nosound parameter -
something about that timer based audio screws up the works on game exit.)

/dev/dsp does exist, I just checked.

As should be obvious by now, I know nothing about esound whatsoever. Am I even
playing in the right ballpark here?
