Ok, here's the question:

I've got my standalone cabinet, running a reasonably recent version of Linux.
(dont remember what version 2.4.something)

It's got my old workstation in it, dual p2-400s, Matrox G400-MAX
and 512k (?) of RAM.

Currently it's running xmame 0.58(9?) in xwindows+DGA at 640x480
so I think most games are scaled x2. I use a VGA->TV dongle,
(a "LifeView" one which doesn't remember it's settings thru a
power cycle, so I can't reccomend it), and can't go over 800x600.
(well i can goto 1024x768, but the scaling is terrible)

Most games are perfect, but some of the later model games
don't run so smoothly. (Puzzly bobble 2 (and later) for example).

Does anyone have any sage advice on what flavour of xmame
(i.e.: gl, sdl, dga, svga, holo-projected, ...) will give the
best performance on this box ? I tried GL, but even with
the MGA-MAX hardware (very good for it's time) performance was
much slower (hardware GL is working properly).

cheersbigears,
-kt
