I remember hearing something about removing support for the asm 68k core, since it can't be placed under (L)GPL if the mamedevs decide to change the license.
This may have nothing to do with it, though. I'll see what I can find this evening.
Anyways, it's not like MAME was getting any faster in the past few years...
