There's no question of hardcoding anything.  These are just the defaults 
in the makefile, the sample rc files, and some of the scripts.

I decided on the following paths:

        /usr/local/bin
        /usr/local/share/xmame
        /usr/local/share/xmess

The FHS purists might disagree, but at least the data paths make more 
sense than what we used to have.
