I've tried several remote desktop applications and found that X2Go fits my needs quite well.

It's quick and does a good job of viewing a remote computer, at least on my home network. While ssh -X it pretty good, it doesn't render some application well, if at all. With X2Go, one can also have multiple applications open on the remote device.

Using Xubuntu 16.04 and reverting to the Ubuntu software center, one finds the X2Go client available.

On the remote PC, one must also install X2Go server. More info:
