Thing is, it has never worked. nvidia-settings don't make a difference, alas.
But until nv99, I could define a mode in xorg.conf. Since we entered the new century (nv101) - I spare you the lengthy details - this messes up the whole lot much worse, and does not result in a solution. Therefore, I was pondering to do away with the xorg.conf; the result is described above. The current way (minimal xorf.conf) at least delivers a workable desktop with some minor effort.
