Perhaps an alternative would be to maintain the current hashing methods, and create an additional layer that reviews similar address - as mentioned earlier - for similarity in content.
Either way, to me, the issue is largely derived from the infancy of the technologies/standards in play, and should over time be reduced through greater compliance with standards. Or at least one would hope so.
Maybe some smart individual will propose a popular solution to this problem that threads through our web creating havoc wherever it goes.
