Hey Nick, George raises one question / issue which I don't think you quite address below, namely, notification of what (I agree w/ George) is pretty new and different behavior from the extension.
I submit that just making the change, without notifying people of it, much less allowing them to "opt out" of it - either through a feature, or through installation of an alternative extension - is not the most user-friendly approach.
