Because I've read anecdotal reports, and heard personal stories from
associates, which claim that sync services does not work reliably between
Entourage and iCal. Duplicated events that reappear again and again,
missing events, corruption, etc. I have a lot of all-day and repeating
events, which are apparently associated with these problems. I recall one
report which claimed Entourage and iCal use different data models for
events, and that certain types of event patterns could not be reliably
transferred from one model to the other.

I was hoping that I could just do a single import of Entourage calendar data
into iCal, maybe followed by a bit of cleanup, and then switch over to iCal
and not use Entourage calendar again. In this plan, I would be running sync
only from iCal to the cloud (Entourage no longer involved).

If Entourage reminders cannot be converted into iCal alarms, that's not a
big deal for me. I'll just re-enter the alarms in iCal for future events.
More of a worry is the comment from the Apple rep that an iCal calendar
imported from Entourage may not reliably sync via MobileMe to iPhone and
other Macs.

So if the imported calendar cannot be repaired/cleaned, and is likely to
cause erroneous results when synced, then I would rather delete it and start
a new iCal calendar from scratch. I can keep my Entourage calendar as a
read-only archive of old events.
