I just started to try your suggestion. Then I noticed that, in the second
dialog that appeared, Entourage was preparing to sync not only my calendar
data, but also my tasks, notes and contacts. I have been (successfully)
synching contacts with MobileMe and iPhone, but I have not been using tasks.
So I tried to cancel the sync to check the implications of this.

There was no cancel button (a frequent omission in MBU apps) so I had to do
a force quit. I opened the To Do List, for the first time in years, and was
surprised to find that it was filled with hundreds of items. I never
intentionally created any To Do items - it appears that every flagged email
was linked to this list. I have no idea how this data will be synced to
iCal.

The sync option in Entourage does not offer the possibility of syncing only
to iCal. It wants to sync to the MobileMe cloud as well. I don't need to
put my entire Entourage calendar in the cloud, nor do I need the entire
calendar history on my iPhone. But I don't see any way to filter the data
that is synced.

I decided against proceeding with the sync. There is just too much going on
here that I don't understand, and I don't want to waste time cleaning up a
mess if it goes bad. It seems like the best plan for me is to just start an
iCal calendar from scratch.
