Merle,

If you read my response to Bill! then the meaning of karma
should be clearer. But just in case you haven't I'll briefly explain.
Practicing good thoughts/deeds doesn't mean that 'bad' (external) things won't
happen to you. You have no control over another's actions against you (such as
robbery, injury, slander etc), but by practicing wholesome thoughts/actions you
won't mentally suffer from them. On the other hand, if you think unwholesome
thoughts/actions you'll suffer from a disturbed mind regardless of what happens
externally. Here's a story to illustrate:

There were 2 young brothers
who received gifts at Xmas. One brother received a bag of marbles and the other
a box of toy cars. After playing with them all day their mother suggested they
swap their presents so as not to get bored with them. The brother with marbles
had no problems with this and gave all of them to his sibling. The other
brother, however, really wanted to
play with the marbles but also really like his cars and so secretly hid a
couple of them. All that night he couldn't sleep because he worried if his
brother had also secretly kept some of his toys,
too.

Mike

Sent from Yahoo! Mail for
