I don't think there is anything that forces you to buy the books.
I have submitted poems to anthologies before on the clear understanding that there was no money in it but that a free copy would be delivered each of the authors. This I think is fine. Then if you want more you let them know.
I repeat, unless you have signed a contract (I didn't) you are under no obligation to buy the books unless you want to see yourself in print. I looked through the earlier emails with Dipaali Parmar, and there was no mention of any obligation to buy. This rather suggests that the publisher and the compiler of the anthology have not set up a distribution network but are instead relying on the authors to do the job for them, without first telling them that this was how it would be. Very
cute, I must say, and not at all ethical.
Next time you, and I, and I suspect a few others, will ask questions first and submit afterwards.
I propose to forward this response to ZestPoets as this is something we should all be aware of.
