I agree with Jane on all counts. You should clarify one thing with the publisher. If the communication is suggesting that your poem(s) won't be included if you don't pay up, then we are dealing with a vanity publisher, as well as a true-blue hustle, because this information was not mentioned up front, and that publisher should be boycotted by all. In fact, it would then become relevant to know the name of the publisher so that their practices can be exposed in public platforms.
However, if the communication is *requesting* that you buy copies, then you should just buy as many copies as you need or want. Note that by standard ethical publishing practices, you are entitled to an author discount (usually 20-30%) for any copies that you buy. And yes, as a minimum payment for any print publication, I always insist on at least one free contributor's copy, as a token of thanks from the publisher or journal. If they can't manage that amount of respect for their authors, it's hard to have respect for them. With most legitimate, professional publishers they will do this much without your asking; but in India the smaller, shadier publishers sometimes get a bit more dodgy and evasive, so one has to insist. I don't know what the protocol of The Little Magazine is like now, but in 2001 when I had a poem appear there, they didn't even acknowledge acceptance of the poem, and would not have sent me a free copy of the issue if I hadn't explicitly requested it...
