This is Dipalle's email to me and my response. The publishers are SAMPARK (formerly known as Frog books?) and I think Rajeevan Thatchom Poyil is involved.

Vanity publishing is fine as long as you know it is that. Nothing wrong with it: a good many poets have gone that route because as we all know it is hard to get even good poetry published. But one should know exactly what is involved. The answer is, ask first, submit later. If you don't get satisfactory answers, don't submit. Don't sign anything that relinquishes your intellectual ownership unless you get a very respectable amount up front for it and royalties subsequently.

And never ever submit original manuscripts - only copies. I once did this, and got cheated: it was a bitter experience. They attributed the text to me but published my illustrations under somebody else's name. Since the publishers had 'lost' my manuscript I couldn't prove it. Next time I was more careful.

 Dear Dipalle

I have to say that all contributors should at least get one free volume.

You had not mentioned earlier that contributors would be expected to buy copies in order to meet your financial deadlines. This arrangement should have been mentioned at the outset, which you did not do. I have contributed to collections in the past but have never, repeat never, been asked to buy copies, and have always received a (free)contributor's copy.

Not ethical, my dear, I would be inclined to buy one copy for my personal archives and leave you to dispose of the rest as you see fit.

Dear Poets,

I am glad to inform you that the anthology has been accepted by SAMPARK and we are ready to sign the contract and go ahead.

For doing the same I have been asked to buy 100 books at a discounted rate from Sampark. the MRP is 150/ per copy and the discounted rate is 100/-
Hence , I put forward the same proposal to you. Unfortunately there will be no free copies to the contributing poets. Only 2 copies for the editor.

So if each of us were to buy 7 copies each that would suffice to meet the deadline.

Please make a D.D or P.O In the name of
DIPALLE PARMAR   and post it by the 6th of Dec.
