well, the idea is to have two separate copies of the data, for backup / DR.
being able to serve content from the backup host is only a benefit, not a
requirement.

the change rate is fairly low, perhaps 50GB/day, and all the changes are done
over NFS, which is not especially fast to begin with.  currently the connection
is GE, but it would be easy enough to do link aggregation if needed.
