Perhaps the master files are created only temporary to run po2debconf once? Maybe Scott knows more?

Tested kfreebsd-amd64/wheezy, armel/wheezy, fine.
It doesn't work on squeeze on any architecture. The problem is:

After I dropped the autoreconf part it built on squeeze-i386.

I added a check to disable autoreconf in squeeze. Now it also builds fine in squeeze.
