Alain did some research on different open source hosters some time ago. IIRC Sourceforge and Fedora was among the interesting offers. I made an empty lincity-ng project some times ago on SF, but i agree the UI is not good : from http://sourceforge.net/projects/lincity-ng/ it is hard to find http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/lincity-ng/ which is simple and enought for us i think (Thats why i like fedorahosted, whihc set up only aone trac instance and nothing else, but wolfgang poiinted some not nice requisite = give phone number to create an account ! - I personally like code.google, has a 4GB quota, support SVN, Git and Hg, has nice and simple interface I had a look this afternoon at code.google, and liked it - clean look - wiki - bts , with attachments up to 10 MB - svn, git or hg - mailing list I guess it is as safe as sourceforge ATM we have 1.1G in SVN, and another 1.2G as downloadable files, most of them old source and binaries. http://developer.berlios.de/project/showfiles.php?group_id=2929 No idea if we can export the bug tracker and patch manager. - patch manager is mostly empty. - bugs can be triaged and recreated We need to move the mailing list as well. yes, very important. Do you know if berlios will keep at least one redirection page for each project, to help transition (3 monthes is rather short) First step : Choose google or sourceforge or another ? - my vote is code.google svn or git (or hg even if dont know it..) - my vote is git or svn i d'ont care (i use gitsvn on top of svn :) ) Cheers ___ Lincity-ng-devel mailing list Lincity-ng-devel@lists.berlios.de https://lists.berlios.de/mailman/listinfo/lincity-ng-devel

Re: [Lincity-ng-devel] Current status
Hello Le 08/09/2011 04:12, João Ricardo Lourenço a écrit : Hello. I've been following the project and this mailing list for quite some time now. I also sent in a couple of patches that I think got accepted about one and a half years after I'd sent them. i remember your nickname, but can't find which patch you sent :-( My question is quite simple: What's the status of Lincity-NG? What features are being worked on? Personnally i am working slowly (mostly on my laptop in train while going to work) on the following things 1 - improve water management and add pollution transport with water, (sadly actual with fukushima) which was the reason for adding waterwells and new map with altitude and real rivers. 2 - As a side effect i am trying to add a new interface page for land generator, but i am really bad in c++ so i took time to got something very far from perfect, but i am not far from something usable. 3 - i also made some improvements to improve maxspeed that i will commit soon. (re inline general_transport). Maybe i should commit everything in an 'experimental branch, so other developper can help/teach me :) I have other ideas, but i want to commit at least (3) and (2) and work on (1) before anything else. Can we expect it to get closer to the last simcity-true game series (simcity 4)? I dont know the simcity game series, and do not care :) Can we see it go in a different direction, with more buildings and a more intuitive display of the data, for instance? I did a draw of a new interface i would like (cut paste in gimp), and tried some modifications, but nothing clean currently/ I am also gathering more documentation, to have more realistic ordrers of magnitude (including surface of buildings wrt production) One personal wish would be to have several cities (lets say 3) with different settings. Maybe a first step on that direction can be done with pre defined scenarios for example - 1 rich + high-tech + low interest rates + low population + green - 1 poor + low-tech + high interest rates + lots of shanties + desert or with a improved interface for starting new game (more settings...). The main problem for me is that the game uses *hundreds* of global variables, and i am not good in C (and very bad in C++) as i only learnt fortran 20 years ago :) What about some kind of netplay (I'm sure having a server and just sending out some data once in a while and keeping in sync wouldn't be too hard to implement if you designed the code)? I think netplay requires the same modification as my multi-city whish ? I don't see how it can be multiplayer (one city each ? echange wia ports?) but i like this idea. And if progress isn't being seen, are there any other simcity-like games which you'd recommend? I know this is probably a bad taste question, but I really enjoyed lincity-ng when I first played it. Then I waited. And waited. And waited. And nothing new came. I get that it follows the simcity1 (2?) design instead of the 3000 and 4, but I kind of miss those games and would like to see an open-source alternative. I always hoped some fork of lincity-NG would come up to do just this, but not even the project itself seemed to move forward. it is slowly moving. One thing i really want is to use a trac instance (either on sourceforge or fedorahosted) as i am really tired with the berlios obsolete tools (no decent ticket, separated wiki, no attachment) Lastly, is there some extensive documentation on the game? The wiki is the only extensive documentation. Maybe it could be good to improve Doxygen, but i am afraid i messed it up one day i was on nerves ;-) so maybe check the configuration before the commit when i added Docygen comment in each files (one line at the end) Cheers Alain Thanks, Jorl17 ___ Lincity-ng-devel mailing list Lincity-ng-devel@lists.berlios.de https://lists.berlios.de/mailman/listinfo/lincity-ng-devel ___ Lincity-ng-devel mailing list Lincity-ng-devel@lists.berlios.de https://lists.berlios.de/mailman/listinfo/lincity-ng-devel
Re: [Lincity-ng-devel] Fullmoon build
Hello Marko Thanks or choosing Lincity-ng as an example for your buildbot :), and reporting us build error message If i remember correctly i never saw the message. XGetText actions too long (max 10240)! The 2 other messages at runtime, are due to lack of data (images and xml files describing the interface The path should be ./lincity-ngexecutable ./data/ sounds and xml ./build/.. ./src./... if you run it from ./build/... it will fail to get the data (not sure i never tried, but sounds reasonnable) I am afraid a nightly build is a bit to much compared to the current pace of development ;-) but it is a nice tool. Re: [Lincity-ng-devel] Fullmoon build
Hi again Marko i sent my previous answer too fast A build bot like yours is intersting as it provides an plateform we maybe don't have Ideally for us i think 1/ maybe on a monthly basis 2/ compile log in debug mode VARIANT=debug jam (equivalent to make debug, you can add -jN too if you want to use N core in parrallel like for make) This VARIANT=debug sets -Werror gcc compiler flag so we know what new version of compiler are doing (see in Jamrules) 3/ send by email to one list or developper(s) account(s) ideally only the NEW messages that did not occured in previous built (maybe just the diff for dayly built, or if too big the full log ?) I think things like this may exist (in debian, and also opensuse built system), and we don't need it , but i hope these remarks may help you :) Cheers Alain Le 06/09/2011 00:30, Marko Lindqvist a écrit : Hello In Open Source community I have been most active in Freeciv ( http://www.freeciv.org/ ) development, but I also run a couple of one-man-projects, and have made minor contributions to other projects. Re: [Lincity-ng-devel] URGEND: use LinCityNG to save the real world
Dear Michael Christen, and everybody My short answer to your questions : YES :-) - do you believe it would be possible to integrate the subject 'energy saving' into LinCityNG? (ideas about that? .. type of heating, energy price, availabiliy in the city gas/oil/distric heating, solar energy panels on houses etc) Yes, I like this idea, and LinCity already have energy sources(wood, coal, wind, sun), power lines, roads and pollution (coal power stations produce a lot of air pollution) It is possible to add energy in houses, insulation, and other energy consideration, it needs time... - do you believe it would be possible to use OpenStreetMap data to auto-construct cities (LARGE cities) in LinCityNG? There is (was?) one OpenStreetMap man on the list, the question was asked some times ago. Technically it is possible, but the result may be fun (lincity road are only Nort-South or East-West, and all buildings would be identical unless we have a graphist) If this could be done, then maybe it would be nice to approach the city administration in Frankfurt again to suggest a project to actually implement such a functionality. This would mean to possibly get money to get this done. But this is just an idea. Not a promise. If I get a 'yes' from you we may plan what to do very carefully. I cannot promise either, but i am interested. Cheers Alain ___ Lincity-ng-devel mailing list Lincity-ng-devel@lists.berlios.de https://lists.berlios.de/mailman/listinfo/lincity-ng-devel

Hi i digged a little more this weird bug : In attachment you'll find - a simple patch that fix this (or more probably a workaround) - the backtrack from gdb (on latest svn) (game map is bounded by (0,0) (x,y) (100,100) ) I just don't understand why this bug does not happen all the time, and stayed hidden for so long (it appears in a very stable part of the code, untouched for years) I'll try to have a deeper understanding later. Re: [Lincity-ng-devel] Move away from Berlios and plan for future ?
Hi everybody I am really tired of the bad tools at Berlios for managing bugs and planning, so i summarise my point of vue and proposal and expect *all* readers to answer (that will show how few/many we are currently). rant - impossible to send files (eg pictures) - bug tracking without roadmap - ugly look - BTS in reverse order (the answer is above the question) A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text. Q: Why is it such a bad thing? A: Top-posting. Q: What is the most annoying thing on usenet and in e-mail and Berlios BTS? I had a look at mantisBT on berlios, but i dont like it: - it is not linked to the other tools : One need to log in mantis too, even if one is ssh-connected at berlios. It is exactly the same as if we had put the bug tracker on another site (eg sourceforge or fedorahosted) - no pretty url : one must chose the project name in a box - absolutely zero support or responsiveness : i asked the folowing several *years* ago, at the start of mantisBT on Berlios, and they are not even acknowledge by someone http://developer.berlios.de/feature/?func=detailfeaturegroup_id=1feature_id=3302 http://developer.berlios.de/feature/?func=detailfeaturegroup_id=1feature_id=4023 /rant So i have no hope that berlios will improve soon wrt to this (as they added MantisBT which is really not to my taste), and i really think better tools could boost Lincity-NG development again, and maybe attract other people. Avery White 's project awoke me, and i consider it is the good timing for improving the site and several parts of the doc/code. Proposal : - move to Fedorahosted (i prefer fedorahosted rather than sourceforge, because it is visually simpler and nicer, and they are very responsive via IRC) - trac with milestone : 2.1, TODO, Whislist and maybe more. - move all confirmed bugs, and drop others. - pick whishes from our wikimedia and open corresponding tickets - consider moving to git : - Avery's project should be in a branch, but svn branch and merge is not as convenient as git. And we just keep current well known mailing list, wikimedia, and download url. Please guys, answer and share your opinion on this, or what to do to improve things. Re: [Lincity-ng-devel] LinCity-NG Handbook
Hi Avery Le 17/09/2010 à 01:28, Avery White a écrit : Salutations, After spending quite a bit of time on this, I've decided to create a sort of 'handbook' for new developers (and to serve as a reference when I'm looking for a function that I saw an hour ago...but now can't remember where it is for the life of me). The bottom line is that LinCity-NG needs documentation for the developer, heck, *I* need this because to me, this is incredibly confusing. There is a kind of documentation in the wiki http://lincity-ng.berlios.de/wiki/index.php/Developer#Eternal_Development For me the UI is confusing, but the engine is clear I welcome any doc you can write about the UI, but take care of not losing your aim. Maybe adding your notes/remarks/comments in the wiki (and the code?) is enought and it would take much less time than a formalised book. Since doing a re-write is beyond the scope of what I can do on my lonesome (or beyond what I think the dev team leaders would like a focus on), this is something that I can do. I will kindly submit what I finish to you guys for refinement (GPL of course!). I think you should write this in a place where we can read it and if possible write too. We globally know how it works, so we can answer your questions, or at least give some hints. I get an understandable field manual that my supervisors would very much like to have so they know I'm not wasting their time (as well as something I can use to keep everything straight), and you guys get the same - and something to feed new developers so they can get up to speed quickly so as to start writing relevant code. The goal: 1) To enable new developers so that they may contribute to the subsequent versions of LinCity-NG without wasting time simply 'figuring out' the code. I think you should not spend too much time on this large task. 2) To provide a ready quick-reference to existing developers Yes small quick ref guide is good (and fast to write) 3) To prevent redundantly answering questions posed to the uninitiated The traffic on the list is very low, we can answer all the questions. 4) *To speed up the overall development of LinCity-NG* The developpement is done by volunteers (like you and me), and currently there are no big development going on, so nothing to speed-up. I hope that your project and enthousiasm will make things move faster :-) A few notes concerning the specification: 1) It will be written under the GPL 2) It will be written as an .odt text document (i.e. but not limited to, OpenOffice) 3) It's design is to *introduce *the source code of LinCity Some preferences that I would kindly ask if this idea 'takes': 1) People typically don't read manuals over 75 pages if they can help it. My goal is to keep this document near that (hence *introduction). * 2) Information that exceeds that should (in my opinion) go to another, albeit similar, document entirely: LinCity Handbook 2 (for example). While writing this so far...I do have a question: How many countries are currently represented by the dev team? In data/locale there are 15 differents languages (plus english) Kind Regards (and I will be eagerly awaiting your reply!), Avery White Texas AM University Environmental and Water Resources Engineering ___ Kind regards Alain ___ Lincity-ng-devel mailing list Lincity-ng-devel@lists.berlios.de https://lists.berlios.de/mailman/listinfo/lincity-ng-devel

Re: WINE in Squeeze taking associations of everything
Le 03/09/2010 à 05:28, GhostlyDeath a écrit : Hello, with the current WINE in Squeeze, all the file associations change and this is very annoying and as such I cannot have WINE installed, which means not testing my programs in a Windows-Like environment. WINE ruins my desktop completely. What I mean by this is that: Any text file now open in notepad.exe instead of gEdit. It might as well open up DosBox with FreeDos' version of EDIT.COM. Any image file opens up in paint instead of eye of gnome or GIMP. Any HTML file opens up in WineBrowser instead of epiphany. It's impossible to change single file associations because even if I use the GNOME association stuff, alot of other things still use WINE stuff regardless and cannot be changed. In lenny, none of this happened and everything worked great, however that changed in Squeeze. Why do WINE associations take priority now instead of in the past when they did not? I use Window Maker with gnome-terminal as my terminal, epiphany as my browser. Any suggestions would be very helpful. Re: [Lincity-ng-devel] Avery - Updated TODO Questions
Le 02/09/2010 à 00:03, Avery White a écrit : Alain, Hi again Avery (i reply on the list...) I think I figure out most of the things I had mentioned in my previous email. As I had said before, I'm trying to take out the fire functionality. On the simulation side, I think I have everything done. However, on the graphics side...it's proving to be more challenging. What is the user-menu on the left side of the screen called? I'm trying to remove the firestation entity (Monument, health, sports field, etc). The UI is described in xml files located in /data/gui the main toolbar is in /data/gui/buttonpanel.xml and related actions are in /src/lincity-ng/ButtonPanel.cpp To do this, I've commented out the firestation group in lintypes.cpp (and the GROUP_FIRESTATION variable in a variety of other places)...but this only moves the descriptions around (i.e. now the firestation is gone, but places a monument instead...like the array just went back to the first element (which is monument in that menu), consequently, Sports Field is now Shanty Town...which is the next group listed in lintypes.cpp, near line 400). So the behavior I'm getting is pseudo-predictable. oh oh ! As you saw you should not modify lintypes.cpp, because it a declaration with initialisation : struct GROUP main_groups[NUM_OF_GROUPS] = { ... } If you comment out some part, the count will change, so you'll need to change all the numbers in groups.h and modify all saved files accordingly! You should just leave it untouched, or add your new builings at the end of the list (and in groups.h ...) I just wish I could eliminate the graphic entirely. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I am not sure i understand what you want: - use a saved game and replace all existing firestations by (let's say) trees or - de-activate firestations (and supress them from tools) but keep their graphics if some exists (as they are nice buildings :-) ) Alain ___ Lincity-ng-devel mailing list Lincity-ng-devel@lists.berlios.de https://lists.berlios.de/mailman/listinfo/lincity-ng-devel

You need to do that with your monitors. I cannot change anything in my laptop monitor (so temperature is unknown and warm), and my (cheap) external monitor proposes only 6300 or 9000. You also need to be aware that luminescence of the monitor plays a big part in it too so 5000K might look off-ish on another monitor, ok even with the same panel they can look different as I have both an LG and a Dell with an LG panel and they look way different. Considerably different. Thanks for advices. I guess i ll have to stay like this until i buy a new laptop ! In there, you can mark each partition as keep, ignore, format, etc. Also in there, you can assign each partition a mount point as well. That sounds good. So I shouldn't have any problems with 5.0.5 supporting existing ext4 partitions. Lenny does not support ext4 for /boot (maybe / too), but it can manage ext4 for other partitions. https://ext4.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Ext4_Howto#For_people_who_are_running_Debian http://wiki.debian.org/Ext4 For sure there is a backported kernel with ext4 support, it works flawlessly for me. http://backports.org/ http://packages.debian.org/lenny-backports/kernel/linux-image-2.6-686 Alain. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
