Re: [GNC] latest gnucash release (3.1) feedback

2018-05-07 Thread Adrien Monteleone
You can tailor the colors and fonts to your liking using a custom CSS file. I’m
not sure what you mean by ‘layout’ but the new Gtk+3 version does have more
padding in many areas. I don’t think this is easily changeable, but it might be
possible.

I’m not sure what is causing your flickering issues though. (I’m using High
Sierra on a Mac Mini and don’t see any such issues) Those would probably be
worth filing bug reports over. However, there’s a good chance those are video
card related and might not be necessarily solvable via GnuCash code. Do you use
any other Gtk+3 apps on your Mac? (if so and those apps don’t flicker, then
that would help to show it is a GnuCash problem and not a Gtk problem)

Finally, note that there is a more recent version of 2.6, The latest out is
2.6.21. It fixes several bugs from that 2.6.19-1 release. (The 2.6.20 had some
major issues precipitating the 2.6.21 ‘final’ 2.6 release)

Re: [GNC] Tax Report Options not working

2018-05-07 Thread David Carlson
I cannot say whether version 3.x is different as I have not tried that, but
in the 2.6.x versions it is necessary to use the tax report options
configuration to assign a tax form, line number and copy number to each tax
worthy account individually before it will appear in the Tax report. Since
it is impossible to do this to more than one account at a time, it is very
tedious to set up initially, but it is nice once it is working. In my case
I am in the US and using the US forms. I started with accounts that are
assigned to the basic income lines on the 1040 form. If your tax situation
involves as many forms and lines as mine, it will probably take several
trials to find all the accounts that are tax worthy and get them correctly
assigned.

Once you feel that you are close you can check the Tax Info Column in the
Chart of Accounts to verify whether any given account is configured for the
tax report.

Since you state that you did those things but the information is not
'sticking', that is probably a bug in the 3.x release. I know that others
have reported bugs with various reports in v3.x

Lets hear from others who have migrated with a previously configured tax
report.

[GNC] Tax Report Options not working

2018-05-07 Thread Tom Charles
Hello,

I am using v3.1 of GNUCash and I am try to set up the Tax Schedule Report
and cannot figure out why I cannot get the report to run and give me the
expected data. The message I get is the following:

Period from 2018-Jan-01 to 2018-Dec-31
Tax Year 2018
Tax Entity Type: *None specified*
All amounts in USD unless otherwise noted
The Income Tax Report is only available for valid Income Tax Entity
Types. Go to the Edit->Tax Report Options dialog to change your Income Tax
Entity Type selection and set up tax-related accounts.

I did use the Edit->Tax Report Options to set the tax related information
for my accounts.

In the dialog box I select Edit. Then I set the "Type" to "Individual,
Joint, etc. - Files US Form 1040 Tax Return", then clicked apply.
I then went through and for each account that I wanted in the report I
selected the "Tax Related" box, then selected the TXF category for each. I
then clicked OK.

I noticed when I looked at the accounts in the "Accounts" page it stated
(under the "Tax Info" heading) for each account that the "Tax Entity Type
was not specified" for every account I set up. This seems to relate to the
notice I get when I run the report.

What am I missing? Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

[GNC] "error parsing file" after upgrading from 2.6.x to 3.1

2018-05-07 Thread Brian Buchalter
Forgive me if this is a duplicate question, but I could not find any recent
results.

I am a macOS user and longtime Gnucash 2.6.x user. I wanted to try out the
new 3.1 release, but when I attempt to open my .gnucash file, I am told
there was an error parsing the file. No other information is given and the
file does not open.

Can anyone guide me in troubleshooting this please? If it's happening to
me, I imagine it's happening to others.

Thanks!

[GNC] latest gnucash release (3.1) feedback

2018-05-07 Thread Scott Cason via gnucash-user
I have been using Gnucash for a while now on a OSX laptop.  So far I have been
satisfied with all its nuances.  However, this latest release I am more than
unhappy with.  I don't know if my issues are the same between all OS' but as
for my Mac I have gone back to v2.6.19-1.
What I do not like about the new 3.1 is:(1) there seems to be a lot of graphics
issues at launch,,, page flickers and windows flash(2) basically, I do not like
the way the color scheme works;  colored tabs almost makes it impossible to
read the tab.  this is unlike prior versions where tab color did not interfere
with tab titles(3) overall, I do not like the new layout/color/font... the look
is totally different and I do not like it.(4) Maybe if there weren't issues 1
and 2, #3 would not be quite so noticeable and I might not have even noticed.

Karen, feel free to ask questions.
No question is silly, although it may be basic, without basics you

Unless you really know what you’re doing MySQL is not what you want. You
can easily convert it using File>Save As... to the default XML. Unless
your computer has a tendency to crash a lot this is the safest option; if
it does crash a lot SQLite3 combined with a good automatic backup system
is safest. MySQL and Postgresql are suitable only for folks with
experience running, administering, and especially backing up those
 servers.

The reason for my original Query is that my bank actually calls
 these transaction accounts
"VISA Debit" and I wasn't sure where in the Tree they should go, as
 VISA is usually a Credit

Since I viewed them as regular Bank accounts (not all have their

I have created them as BANK accounts, but I wanted to check that was
 the correct place in
the CoA before starting a new Book.

We could be of much more help (advice how to handle) if you were
able to describe for us what you are talking about. There are
different types (oh dear, that word again) of "debit cards". Here
 are some possibilities.
 1) You have a checking account. In addition to being able to write
checks against this account you also have been issued a debit card
against this account. This allows you to use the card for purchases
that would otherwise require a credit card. The TOTAL limit on your
card is the "funds available" in the account just like with checks
but there may be a transaction size limit and a daily limit.
Method -- no additional account involved. Treat transactions
involving the card just as it they were checks except you probably
lack a check number for them.
 2) Like "1" except you have no checks.
 Method -- handle like "1"
 3) Like "1" except not your bank account but a virtual account.
Every month some agency adds an amount to your card balance. EBT
 cards, for example.
Method -- I'd create an asset account for this even though it
isn't really "mine" in the normal sense.
 4) Gift cards, pre-paid debit cards, refund cards, etc. These might
be restricted to a particular vendor.
Method --- I'd create a "type" of asset for these as long as
this is understood as simple a parent under assets in the CoA. I'd
probably put pre-paid debit cards under current assets but might
want to think hard about how to treat ones that were restricted as
 to use.
 Something else? Describe.

Re: [GNC] Handling VISA Debit Accounts

2018-05-07 Thread randix
Did VISA debit cards do somethin' to you as a child, why are you pickin' on
them (that reply is to no one in particular, only the thread, so pleeze, no
one get defensive)?

A debit card [to me] is a non-existent entity, it has no business having its
own "account".

My schwab checking account has a VISA debit card (yippee, so
impressive...)... if i use it to buy a hamburger at Steve's Burgers, I enter
it in the schwab checking account as "Steve's Burgers", I think that
deserves a "duh"...

If I use the debit card for ATM withdrawals, I call it ATM-23, ATM-42.50,
ATM-43, ATM-203, etc., regardless what ATM machine I decide to hug. My
gnucash entry automatically enters the atm charge into an expense account
for atm charges, and pushes the remaining bucks into my cash account (which
IS deserving of it's own account). After years of doing this, I have every
combination covered. So ATM-23 means $3 bank charge and $20 debited from my
checking and pushed into my "cash" account.

Course Schwab reimburses me for all ATM charges at the end of each month, so
that acts as a credit to my expense account for bank atm charges...

Works great. As much as I luv my debit card, sorry, debit card, you don't
deserve your own place... :) Now if you had brunette hair, about 5' 7"
and we'd talk.

Misunderstanding. The term "type" being used to mean different things.

The original question was using "type" in the sense I was answering the

Re: [GNC] new v3.0 install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

2018-05-07 Thread John Ralls
Dennis,

The debian distributed GnuCash is compiled for SQL as well as XML, you just
need to install the appropriate additional package(s), usually libdbi,
libdbi-drivers, and mysql-client, pgsql-client, or sqlite3.

For building you need to have one SQL backend installed so that the tests work.
SQLite3 requires the least futzing so if your need is only for passing the
tests--or even just to get it to build if you don’t care about the
tests--that’s the one to use.

Yes, you should convert your book to XML.

Re: [GNC] Problem with Saved Reports

2018-05-07 Thread Adrien Monteleone
David,

When I was looking at my version of the file, I too considered those GUIDs. You
might be on to something. I would think it possible to parse the datafile for
those ids and see if they still exist and what they point to. I’m thinking of a
script that checks the ids in the saved-report file against the datafile,
listing those it finds along with the item they point to and flagging those it
doesn’t find. Of course this script would need to take different approaches for
XML vs. SQL.

I guess a way to test the GUID theory before any script writing is:

* create some dummy accounts
* create one or more saved report configs using those accounts
* delete one or more dummy accounts
* close & reopen GnuCash
* check the saved-reports list to see if that test report is still there.

I would think GnuCash does something like set up a foreign key pointing to the
old GUID when it deletes an account, but perhaps not. It also may or may not
alter your saved-report file accordingly. (if not, that would explain it I
think) I haven’t browsed that code yet but it might give some clues.

I have my doubts though because I’m sure many accounts from many users have
been deleted over time (myself included) and unless there is something several
years back in the mailman archives, I haven’t heard of this problem. (not to
say it hasn’t happened and simply not reported)

But... Looking at Bugzilla, I see this report:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=691910 where David Carlson mentions
an idea to set a dirty bit to flag changes in the CoA to better handle reports
left open in tabs. This tells me that if changing the CoA with an open report
can be a problem, it might be a problem for saved configs as well. While the
bug is still open, it is for the 2.4.x series and so might not be relevant
anymore. I don’t see any other info.

I don’t know of any report ‘Check & Repair’ function or if the included Check &
Repair works on reports as well. Again, that’s for a dev or code browse to
answer. I can’t get to it at the moment, but if you haven’t received a more
definitive answer by later this evening, I’ll take a look see. (I’ll probably
browse the code just out of curiosity anyway)

Regards,
Adrien

Re: [GNC] new v3.0 install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

2018-05-07 Thread Dennis Powless
I have no idea

If I install gnucash from the official repositories ie apt get install gnucash,
would a database be included in that installation?

It seemed in order to do the build I needed a database backend. So I chose that
one.

Otherwise from just a general user I don’t use a database with gnucash however
if there is a database running on the backend that I don’t specifically
interact with then I’m not sure which to use.

Certainly, the build instructions stated to choose one of the three, if there
is a big issue with choosing the wrong one or the right one maybe that should
be specified in those directions?

So, should I convert it to xml?

Again, I thank you guys for all the help, very much appreciated!!!

Re: [GNC] Problem with Saved Reports

2018-05-07 Thread D via gnucash-user
Adrien,

Thanks for the reply. I already looked at the files.

This has happened twice, once about a year and a half ago, and once last week.
When it happened first, I assumed a glitch in my machine, and focused on
recovery. This is incident number two. So, there's no opportunity to discern
any patterns.

I didn't see anything particular in the files to suggest a reason for the
truncation. The file seemed to end at a report boundary (although I am not a
Scheme programmer).

I note that the last line with data on it was line 666, so maybe it's just
possessed by the devil.

The original file is 181,670 bytes; the truncated file is 42,379 bytes.

I see that most report entries in my file include the comment "based on
template " , and I wonder whether these reports become unstable if the
report upon which they are based gets deleted.

Another thing that I see is that many reports include account guids, and I am
not sure whether these reports become unstable when an account gets deleted,
thus leaving an invalid guid in the report. Perhaps Gnucash has a report clean
up function that it performs sporadically?

David

It is a plain text file that looks fairly straightforward in its description,
so even without a roadmap for the syntax, you could peek at it and see if any
report doesn’t seem to conform to the norm or if there is errant text there.

Just a thought unless/until you get a more definitive answer.

Unless you really know what you’re doing MySQL is not what you want. You can
easily convert it using File>Save As... to the default XML. Unless your
computer has a tendency to crash a lot this is the safest option; if it does
crash a lot SQLite3 combined with a good automatic backup system is safest.

Re: [GNC] Handling VISA Debit Accounts

2018-05-07 Thread Karen Stingel

Thanks everyone for the responses, that things cleared up a lot

The reason for my original Query is that my bank actually calls these
transaction accounts
"VISA Debit" and I wasn't sure where in the Tree they should go, as VISA
is usually a Credit

account and therefore a Liability.

Since I viewed them as regular Bank accounts (not all have their cards
issued at this time),
I have created them as BANK accounts, but I wanted to check that was the
correct place in

the CoA before starting a new Book.

Karen,

I do not give my debit card an account because I just use it as a
plastic checkbook on my checking account.  Thus I just enter a
transaction from the checking account, using a keyword 'Debit' in the
check number box.

Ok, so I re-read the instruction from David

I followed the directions from this page
https://tutorialforlinux.com/2018/03/13/how-to-create-menu-launcher-ubuntu-18-04-bionic-lts/

And was able to get a menu item.

I was able to run Gnucash 3.1

It opened my file, seems to be working fine!!!

Thank you ALL for the help!!!

I used the MySQL database, not sure if that was right or not. No, idea
what I used on the previous install.

That’s not quite right. The account *types* are hard coded and control program

Karen,

I do not give my debit card an account because I just use it as a plastic
checkbook on my checking account. Thus I just enter a transaction from the
checking account, using a keyword 'Debit' in the check number box.

Yes, it’s a bank account. The debit card is just a way of accessing it. No,
it’s not new: I got my first ATM card in 1976 when Visa was still a division of
the Bank of America called “Bankamericard". It’s also not a separate account
type, it’s just a plain old checking account--even though you may never write a
paper check on it. The $50 credit limit is just “overdraft protection” under a
different name.

The python bindings are not enabled in the Windows or Mac all-in-one packages
that we distribute because they must be linked with the same python library
that the python interpreter running the program is so we’d have to include a
complete python distribution in the package. They’re already too fat thanks to
WebKit. In any case, you can’t add account types from the bindings, they’re
hard-coded in libgnucash/engine/Account.cpp.

Re: [GNC] new v3.0 install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

2018-05-07 Thread Dennis Powless
I noticed that also, I was able to install those. except the OFX files,
libofx6, libofx4. I was able to install libofx-dev however.

cmake -DWITH_AQBANKING=OFF -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/home/dennis/.local
/home/dennis/Applications/gnucash-3.1

It ran

Then I did the make then make install.

No errors

Now what do I do.

I don't see it on the list of applications, terminal says I need to install
gnucash

These commands are missing the "Install" parameter compared to the apt-get
invocation for OFX.

If you change
sudo apt-get
info
sudo apt-get install

the proper dependencies will be installed. I have updated the wiki page to
reflect the exact commands.

Alternatively if you don't want to build with aqbanking support you can also
add
-DWITH_AQBANKING=OFF
to your cmake command line options.

If you do that you don't have to install the aqbanking dependencies at all.

How does gnc handle the Case of a VISA Debit card?
Technically, this is a BANK account with a VISA enabled card and a
$0.00 Credit Limit

Should it just be created as a normal BANK account type?

Are there any plans to include this as a new Asset Account type in
future editions of gnc?

As others have already answered, if this is just a payment card
associated with an existing bank account (just another way of making
withdrawals from THAT account) no account to be added. But if it is a
separate account (with some institution) then yes. Thus you might have
an asset account category for "gift cards", "prepaid debit cards", etc.

HOWEVER -- you have raised a more general question, perhaps
misunderstanding something. The "built in default" accounts that come
with gnucash CoA skeletons are just for convenience satisfying the needs
of many new users. There is nothing magic about the types of accounts
included, either that they would be necessary or sufficient. If you find
you need another category of asset accounts (another sub tree under
assets) simply add that. Same with liabilities and equity (and thus for
income and expense).

Your CoA is YOUR CoA specific to YOUR needs.

Re: [GNC] Handling VISA Debit Accounts

2018-05-07 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
In my experience (admittedly limited), a debit card is a means to extract funds
from an account—not an account on its own. Considered this way, it is simply a
variant of a check, or of writing a withdrawal slip and handing it over to a
teller (for those who remember those days). There is no need for a separate
account type; “Bank” or “Asset” suffice.

Rick’s method will certainly work, although I have never bothered with that
level of detail.

[GNC] Problem with Saved Reports

2018-05-07 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
Hello,

I have encountered now a couple of times the unpleasant experience of calling
up my saved reports configurations, only to find all but 5 or 7 completely
gone. When I examine the saved-reports-2.4 file stored on my hard drive, it has
been reduced in size to about 30k. This has happened now on two completely
different occasions, separated by months. Thankfully, I have been able to go to
backups and locate the original 180k saved-reports-2.4, and my reports are back
where they should be.

For the record, there have been no other indications of trouble (i.e., no
frozen instances of GnuCash, no crashes), and I have not undertaken any major
operations (loading of huge numbers of transactions, closing books, etc.).
Just, one day, the reports are there, the next, they’re not.

The fact that this has now happened more than once suggests a serious problem
(most likely with something stupid I have done) with my saved reports file, and
I would like to ask whether there is any sort of utility (like Check and
Repair) that I can run on the saved reports to determine what might be causing
this file to auto-truncate itself. Assuming that there isn’t, does anyone have
any suggestions on what I might look for that could cause this behavior? It’s
really disturbing to open up GnuCash, and discover that my reports have been
simply disappeared.

TIA,
David T.

The scrollbar issue is new because of the new way scrollbars are handled in
gtk3. We have rearranged the columns in the reconcile window such that the
checkbox is now in the first column. The scrollbar will now only obscure part
of the price when it gets activated. This is however not a column you need to
click in.

No, you don't need to type the %f. Gnucash will open the last file when you
don't pass any pathname to the command.

The %f is typically used in *.desktop files to pass on a filename from the
desktop file's commandline on to gnucash itself.

When yo invoke gnucash directly this is not necessary and maybe even unwanted.

[GNC] more UI issues

2018-05-07 Thread Ed

Gday again, the new version is proving challenging.

1 - when I reconcile, the two windows are now modal. i.e. one obscures
the other. This makes it hard to change xactions on the go. Before, I
could just select the original window easily, without the reconcile
window coming to the front, and covering it.

2 - in the reconcile window, a scrollbar shows up on the right hand
side, meaning the checkbox is tiny, so often I scroll by mistake, which
is rather annoying. This never happened in the past, and I'm not sure why.

Any suggestions on how to deal with these?

Thanks again,

Ed

How does gnc handle the Case of a VISA Debit card?

$0.00 Credit Limit

Should it just be created as a normal BANK account type?

Are there any plans to include this as a new Asset Account type in

I'm not sure why you'd want anything other that a Bank Account account type.

I have a bank savings account on which I can use a VISA debit card and
draw cheques, and it's all on one statement, so it wouldn't make sense
to me to have a separate register for it, except, perhaps as a
sub-account, but I think that unnecessarily complicates things.

What is arguably missing is a "Debit card" Action on the transaction,
but I just make a note of Visa transactions in the description.

How I normally handle mine is any transaction I make from my debit card,
I enter as a transaction in my bank account, usually using the word
"Debit" for the ref. number field. Of course, you could use any code
word there you wanted (ex. "Visa", "MC", "CCard", etc.) as long as you
are consistent in using the same term. But there is no reason to
complicate things by creating this as a separate bank account from the
one your funds come out of. As to the rest, I'll let the developers
answer those, though I don't see the point in not using the create a new
account function in GNUCash itself to create any new accounts you need,
or to create a specialized function for handling debit cards.

Re: [GNC] new v3.0 install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

2018-05-07 Thread DaveC49
Dennis,

You are missing the third part of the cmake command when you type

cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/home/dennis/.local

which is why you are getting the cmake error.

You need to append either

../gnucash-3.1

or

/home/dennis/Applications/gnucash-3.1

on to the end of the cmake command separated by a blank when you enter it,
i.e.

cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/home/dennis/.local ../gnucash-3.1

The first option above is a relative path from the build-cmake directory to
the sources directory. the ".." part works like cd .. and places you in the
applications directory then the /gnucash-3.1 places you in the gnucash-3.1
directory.

The second is an absolute location relative to the root of the filesystem.
Either of these can be interpreted by the cmake command.

Re: [GNC] new v3.0 install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

2018-05-07 Thread DaveC49
Dennis,

The obvious place to put the build-cmake directory is in the Applications
directory. I personally would not name it build-cmake but build-gnucash-3.1.
The reason for that is, to uninstall Gnucash there is no need to retain the
gnucash-3.1 source directory which can be deleted, but you will need to
retain the build directory.

Then there is nothing to identify the build-cmake directory as the build
directory for GnuCash if you call it build-cmake and if you subsequently
compiled another program from the Applications directory using the same
naming convention, you could end up with several build-cmake directories not
knowing which programs they are for, so you would have difficulty
uninstalling them, if you wanted to later. The name is more than likely a
hangover from when the developers were initially testing cmake against the
autotools configure script. They would probably have used a build-cmake and
a build-autotools or something similar to distinguish the parallel builds.

To start the whole process you would after extracting the tarball to
/home/dennis/Applications
Open a shell then

cd /home/dennis/Applications
mkdir build-gnucash-3.1
cd build-gnucash-3.1
"cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/home/dennis/.local
/home/dennis/Applications/gnucash-3.1"
make
make install

Don't type the quotes in the above. They are to indicate that everything
between the quotes goes on one line and there is a single space between
-DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/home/dennis/.local and
/home/dennis/Applications/gnucash-3.1. Part of the confusion may be that if
your screen resoluition is not the same as mine the wiki may be wrapping
lines. I have three different size screens so i will check that out and try
to find a way to ensure the cammands do appear on the one line.

That should install GnuCash 3.1 in your local directory. To run it you could
type in a terminal:

 /home/dennis/.local/bin gnucash %f

I am not exactly sure but I think the %f causes gnucash to open with the
last file it had open. It appears in the installed menu item for gnucash.

You could also add /home/dennis/.local/bin to the path variable by adding
the line

export PATH=$PATH:/home/dennis/.local/bin

to the file /home/dennis/.profile. This should create the PATH variable
with /home/dennis/.local/bin added to it when you log on to the system.
Then you should only have to type

gnucash %f

at the terminal.

When you ran make install and installed in a user directory, I don't think
the install process creates a Menu item accessible from your Desktop but I'm
not totally sure about that as I install to /usr/local normally.

If you look up the procedure for installing Menu items for Ubuntu 18.04, you
could create a Menu item which will start Gnucash. I would use the full path
to the executable in this i.e. /home/dennis/.local/bin gnucash %f. You will
find an icon in
/home/dennis/.local/share/gnucash/pixmaps/gnucash-icon.ico which you can
attach to the menu item as described in the procedure for creating new menu
items in Ubuntu 18.04.

Good Luck

David
