You have two possible issues:

1. The Windows permissions model changed in Vista/Win7/Win8.
Spambayes cannot be installed in the default location, because Windows
won't let it run from there. You must install it somewhere else, like
C:\Spambayes

2. SpamBayes is a 32 bit plugin. If you are using a 64 bit version of
Office, it cannot install as a plugin in Outlook, because 32 bit
plugins don't work in 64 bit applications. If you run 64 bit Office,
you must install SpamBayes as a proxy server between your ISP
connection and Outlook.

[Spambayes] Help with SpamBayes

2013-07-30 Thread Matej Gorenšek
Hi,

I'm Matej and I'm writing a degree about Bayesian spam
filtering methods. I would like to use your spam program for research but I
have little problem. I need to find out, which classsification tehnique
SpamBayes use, but I didn't find any notes about that.

In literature
(http://digital.cs.usu.edu/~erbacher/publications/Bayes-Vikas2.pdf), I have
found 4 significant tehniques that most of spam filters use:
- all tokens filter: Use of all tokens from a new email for classification.
- fixed number of tokens filter: Use of a fixed number of tokens for
classification. These tokens are assumed to be the most effective in the given
e-mail.
- standard deviation threshold filter: This tehnique emphasizes the spam
probability of tokens rather than the number of tokens.
- relative number of tokens filter: Use of relative number of tokens for
classification; for example 30%.

Can you please tell me which tehnique SpamBayes use or is the closest to the
tehnique that SpamBayes use, so that I will know how to start my research? And
if it's impossible to somehow switch between these four tehniques.

Thank you for your help!

Yours sincerely,
Matej ___

[Spambayes] Help

2012-07-31 Thread ChihSin Hua
Dear Sir/Madam:

On an given days, I receive no less than ten (10) junk mails/spams from
overseas (one or two of them within the U. S.) server. Outlook email program
automatically moves 99% of these junk mails/spams to the trash folder that I
created. Outlook email software put 1% of these mails/spams into the Inbox
folder and spambayes can detect these 1% mails/spams.

I use the training routine with the spambayes to train to detect these unwanted
mails. As you can imagine my trash folder is getting very big and I cannot
delete all these unwanted mails from the trash folder. I believe spambayes
program require me to keep all these unwanted mails in the trash folder for
database building. I am warned by my mail server to delete these unwanted
mails as I have exceed the size of the allocated disk space.

Please kindly let me know what is the best way to keep these unwanted mails for
your database building routine.

You have a corrupt database. Unfortunately, you can't run database
recovery because the necessary tools were never provided with the
binary version of the software from SleepyCat. You have no choice but
to delete your training database and start from scratch.

Sorry, we are all volunteers here. It's unlikely that a toll-free number
will help. Can you give some parameters for your setup? What version of

probably can if you include some details about your SpamBayes installation:

  Troubleshooting the SpamBayes Outlook addin

This is a list of common problems, and hopefully their solutions. Please
feel free to suggest additional topics. Currently, we have the following
   problems listed:

 * Toolbar items appear, but fail to work
 * Addin loads with an error message
 * Addin doesn't load
 * Messages fail to filter
 * Messages have incorrect or unexpected Spam values
 * Resetting SpamBayes configuration
 * SpamBayes is not available for all users on the machine
 * All other problems

Some other resources that may be useful in tracking down any problems:

 * There is an online FAQ for SpamBayes with lots of information,
including a section specific to the Outlook addin.
 * The latest online version of this document may have information added
   since release.
 * The online Frequently Reported Outlook Bugs list has the most common
problems people are experiencing, and links to more information about
   the bug.
 * Check to see that you are using the most recent version - it is
possible that your problem has been fixed in a newer release. You
should be able to check for newer versions by selecting Check for new
version from the SpamBayes menu - otherwise, you can visit the
   SpamBayes website and check there.

If you must send someone a mail about SpamBayes, please read this first.

Toolbar items appear, but fail to work

If the toolbar items fail to work, we are facing one of two problems.

 * The addin has failed to load. In this case, along with the toolbars
failing to work, SpamBayes will not be filtering or scoring any
messages. To fix this, see the Addin doesn't load instructions.
 * If the addin has loaded (ie, is filtering and scoring mail) but the
toolbar items don't, we have struck a common problem with the
   toolbars. Follow the instructions below.

First we will try deleting the toolbar, and if that fails, completely
reset all Outlook toolbars. Perform the following steps:

 * Right-click on any Outlook toolbar, and select Customize.
 * In the dialog that appears, ensure the Toolbars tab is selected,
locate SpamBayes in the list of toolbars, and select it.
 * Click on the Delete button. Outlook will ask for confirmation that you
want to delete the SpamBayes toolbar. Select OK.
 * Close the customize dialog. The SpamBayes toolbar no longer appear.
 * Restart Outlook. SpamBayes will re-create the toolbar.

If all else fails, you can completely reset the Outlook toolbars by
removing the file \Documents and Settings\{username}\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outcmd.dat Although this is undocumented by
Microsoft, we have never heard reports of problems. If you are paranoid,
simply rename this file so that you have a copy.

Addin loads with an error message

In this case, when you start Outlook you receive a message indicating that
   SpamBayes could not be initialized.

This means that SpamBayes has loaded, but struck an error during
initialization. If the information in the error message does not indicate
the nature of the error, please report a bug (making sure you attach the
   log file).

Addin doesn't load

If you start Outlook but there was no error message, the SpamBayes toolbar
items do not work and new messages have no spam score or filtering
applied, then the plugin has probably become disabled.

 * Check the log file. If a log file for this session exists, then see if
it contains an error. If not, check the date and time of the log - it
is probably a log from the last time it did work, so is no help to us.
If a log does exist, please report a bug.
 * Check that Outlook shows the addin as enabled.

   If you are running

Leslie I installed spambayes this morning and it was working
Leslie beautifully until this afternoon when it has totally locked
Leslie outlook. Won't let it receive any emails, move spam already
Leslie received to the spam folder, delete any emails etc. Have
Leslie rebooted several times but no luck. And can't remove it
Leslie apparently.

I'm not able to help you much (I don't use Windows), but some people here
probably can if you include some details about your SpamBayes installation:

Windows version
Outlook version
32-bit or 64-bit?
SpamBayes version

Do you have logs you can post? Check the troubleshooting guide to see how
to find your logs. At the moment the SourceForge site is not 100%
available, including our usual link to the troubleshooting guide, so I've
attached a plain text version of it to this message. (The HTML version
might not display well without its usual supporting cast of CSS files.)

You asked your question on the wrong mailing list.
It seems like a typical warning from SpamAssassin, that also has a

Someone else who uses the pop3 proxy regularly can give you more details,

marking messages and ham and spam as appropriate. It should quickly start

[Spambayes] Help Needed

2008-10-09 Thread Brajesh
Dear friends at Spambayes,

I've used Spambayes for many years and love it. Now I'm having a
problem. I go to Junk Suspects, highlight what I want to Recover From
Spam, click on that button, and nothing happens. Same when I click on
Delete As Spam. Same thing when I'm in my Inbox, highlight a message,
and click on Delete As Spam.

Other than that, Spambayes is working fine, sorting out Junk and Junk
Suspects and otherwise working ok.

What can I do to get those buttons to work?

Thanks,

The logs show spambayes is filtering, but I can't explain why you don't see
the toolbar (there are no errors in the logs). If you right-click on the
main toolbar, do you see a Spambayes entry at all? What about if you
right-click, select Customize, then select Toolbars - is Spambayes
listed and its checkbox selected? Did you try resetting the toolbars as
mentioned in the FAQ? Did it have any affect (ie, did your other toolbars
reset too?)

Sorry to throw so many more questions, but there are no other clues for me
to use.

Cheers,

Mark

[Spambayes] Help, Please

2008-06-18 Thread Catherine Arlett
Well, here I am, a dues-paying member of the Spam-Bayes Gang, and I can't
get the darned program to install.

I'm running Outlook 2003 on an HP Pavilion desktop running Windows XP. I
downloaded your program (on Kim Komando's good advice, thank you), and I
have an application file version 104.x.

When I first installed it, it seemed to kick into gear, setting up a nifty
spam folder, reading my junk mail and diverting it, and generally behaving.
The only exceptions were that I never saw a toolbar or, for that matter, an
icon anywhere on my desktop or in the Start menu. I could live with that,
because it seemed to be working.

I think it was working for two or three days. (I shut down my entire system
at night, and reboot each morning.) About three days ago, I got a message
telling me there had been a problem that only I could correct by
reconfiguring the program. And that's where the grief began. I have tried
all the hints and clues and suggestions - and I am baffled!. I have tried
several reinstalls, and there is one notable issue: I don't see the install
wizard, and I know that something requiring 8.3 mb doesn't unfold itself in
no more than the blink of an eye.

What's happening, and what do I need to do next? I'm a cranky old broad of
only moderate techie-nerdiness, and I'm frustrated!

It sounds like your primary problem is that you can't see the spambayes

getting your toolbar to show, and it also includes instructions for finding
you log file - that log file may offer some clues. A very common problem is
that people sometimes accidently delete the entire spam folder, so
spambayes is unable to work correctly. If this is the case, you can
probably find the accidentally deleted folder itself in the Deleted Items
folder.

Cheers,

Do you have multiple accounts set up in outlook Express? If so you might
double-click each of them and disable with the check-box on the first screen

culprit? Have you read through the troubleshooting guide? (I don't do

Re: [Spambayes] help

2008-02-14 Thread Jesse Pelton
After a while, that will happen automatically.

SpamBayes works by examining the characteristics of messages that you
classify as spam. Initially, you have classified no messages, so it has
no information as to what your spam looks like, and it files everything
as possible spam. You train SpamBayes by reclassifying any messages that
it gets wrong. Typically, that means dragging a message from the junk
suspects folder to your inbox or to the junk folder, or selecting the
message and using the Spam or Not Spam button (Recover from Spam or
Delete as Spam in v1.04, I think).

After you've manually classified enough messages, you'll find that
SpamBayes puts almost all messages where they belong. I typically have
excellent results once I have trained a few dozen messages. You should
continue to reclassify any that it gets wrong, as this will improve
future classification.

If you're using the Outlook/Exchange junk mail controls, you may want to
have SpamBayes filter the Outlook Junk E-mail folder as well as your
inbox. I'd recommend the current 1.1 alpha if you want to do this,
because it can move any good messages from the junk folder to your
inbox. 1.04 can't do that, so you have to remember to look in your junk
folder for any messages that Outlook thought were junk but SpamBayes
classified as ham - not the most intuitive thing to do!

Please reply to all when responding. This ensures that your responses
are retained for the benefit of anyone who searches the list archive in
the future.

Re: [Spambayes] Help needed immediately

2007-10-11 Thread Jesse Pelton
Presumably, if you read this, you've sorted out the problem, uninstalled
SpamBayes, or found and searched the SpamBayes mailing list archive.
(I'm writing this mostly for the latter.)

Perhaps you worked out how to use the Advanced Find. The FAQ doesn't
say much about how it works, but what it does say seems to be accurate
for Outlook 2003 (which is what I have).

Alternatively, you might have created new folders for spam and possible
spam and used the SpamBayes Manager to specify that messages should be
moved to those folders. You could also have configured SpamBayes not to
move messages at all. Either way, you could continue to receive
messages while looking for disappeared messages. (Developers: maybe
these options should be added to the FAQ. It has to be upsetting to
realize that if anyone answers a plea for help, you won't know it.)

Or maybe someone took it upon themselves to give you a call. If so,
this was either an act of generosity, paid for out of their own pocket,
or an offer of paid advice. There is no business entity behind
SpamBayes; if anyone gets paid to work on it or support it, I haven't
heard about it. The developers are a loose network of people scattered
around the globe who wrote SpamBayes because it seemed interesting to
them and/or they found it useful, and support is largely contributed by
people like myself who are grateful for SpamBayes' existence. While it
may not seem like it to you at the moment, it's a wonderful program.

I hope you get SpamBayes working for you if you haven't already!

[Spambayes] help

2007-08-27 Thread Janice strauss
My Spambayes crashed over week-end. I deleted it and re-installed but it
won't work. I have Windows XP and Outlook 2000. It appears to download - I
go into Outlook Tools - other - check add-in - it is there but not
checked. I check it and say ok but the next time I look it is unchecked
again. Somehow something is blocking it from working.

Any thoughts?

[Spambayes] help!

2007-08-20 Thread Karen Lu
Hello,

My junk suspects folder has disappeared. I don't know how it happened.
It looks like junk suspects are still being filtered to this folder but
I have no idea where it has gone and how to make it reappear. As a
result, these emails are still in limbo somewhere. The version of
spambayes I am using is 1.0.4. I have the 2007 version of Outlook. I
have read the trouble-shooting guide and I am still stuck. I have also
tried to reset my configuration. Please help!

Many thanks,

Karen, look in every one of your folders that has a plus to the left of
it. You may have inadvertently moved the suspects fold into another

Re: [Spambayes] Help in re-install

2007-05-04 Thread Chuck Cole
I'm not an expert with Spambayes troubleshooting, but might be some
help.

I use Windows XP, and OutLook. I need the Spambayes OutLook Addition,
and you do also. I see the toolbar, but I also see Spambayes on the
Program Menu, and the OutLook addition shows there.

Be sure you have the Outlook addition installed as well as Spambayes.
Close Outlook and re-open it just for good measure and to let OutLook
see it. Look for toolbar.
Toolbar might now be present, but may not be enabled yet.

I frequently make the mistake of moving my Junk Mail folder to a Spam
Samples folder instead of just moving trapped messages. When I do that,
I must
1) move it back,
2) re-identify that folder in filtering on the Spambayes config as
where to put bad stuff, and
3) re-enable Spambayes to operate. I usually forget to re-enable and
must do that.

I do not need to re-generate filtering rules, however, so this
restoration is pretty quick.

Something in that description may help fix your problem. I've
re-installed Spambayes a few times with no great difficulty when I
install the OutLook addition also.

I have other problems with the Spambayes and OutLook interface...

If you can't browse to the config page (and no tray icon visible), that
usually means Spambayes is not running. It will need to be started first.

I'm not quite sure about your tried to search step. It looks like you
should be able to type that address into your browser's address bar and
hit Enter, no searching required. Is that what you're doing?

If the tray app is running, an icon will show up in the tray of the
Windows task bar. The tray is typically in the lower right-hand corner
of the screen, though you can put it elsewhere. It'll probably have a
volume control (represented by a speaker icon) and the current time in
it. I don't know what the SpamBayes icon looks like, but it should
appear in the tray with the other tray items.

Re: [Spambayes] Help me to uninstall - please!

2007-03-14 Thread Mark Hammond
I have used Spambayes for about a year and think it is a
 really effective
program. However, as my anti-virus and firewall subscriptions
 were both
about to expire I did some research and decided to go for
 Zonealarm Internet
Security Suite. As this contains a spam filtering facility I
 have decided to
 give it a try.

The problem I have is that I wish to uninstall Spambayes but
 it does not
show up in the Add/Remove Programs listing. As a compromise (as it is
possible I may want to use it again in the future) I disabled
 Spambayes from
the Manager but even though I uncheck it on the Outlook
 toolbar, if I close
and open Outlook it reappears. I don't have sufficient room
 on my toolbar
for the (large) ZoneAlarm buttons AND Spambayes so really do want to
 uninstall it.

I am running Windows XP SP2, Outlook 2000 and the latest version of
 Spambayes Version 1.0.4 (March 2005).

It is very surprising it doesn't appear in Add/Remove programs - if you used
the installer it certainly should (and does for most people)

To remove it manually, close outlook, then open a command-prompt, change to
the \Program Files\Spambayes\bin directory and execute:

  outlook_addin_register.exe --unregister

Then manually remove the toolbar, as documented at
http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/faq.html#how-do-i-uninstall-the-plug-in.
After that, just remove the \Program Files\Spambayes folder.

Cheers,

Mark

I think the most important question you have to ask yourself is, what
email client do you use? I think that the operating system is not
important. You forgot to tell which email client you use, but from the
headers of your email I learned that you use Microsoft Outlook version 12.

I have seen a lot of questions on this mailing list from people who ask if
spambayes works with Microsoft Outlook version X or Y, and most of the
time the answer is, we don't know, just try it, and if it doesn't work
tell us what the problem is and we'll try to help you.
Since very few of these people come back to the mailing list to report
failures, one can only suppose that it works. The only unfortunate thing
is that most people don't come back to report success either.

So would you please be so kind to try Spambayes on your shiny new PC, and
send a small report of your experiences to the mailing list? That would be
a big help.

Yup. If you're using the pop3 proxy why would your email client be updating
 the database?

Well, what I meant to say is that the email client initiated a mail
download, causing the proxy to update the db.

What version of SpamBayes are you running? I thought the latest
version had zodb and zeo options.

Tom Pop3 proxy version is 1.0.4.

I just rummaged through the change log in the source. It appears that the
zodb/zeo support is new in 1.1. You can try 1.1a2 or 1.1a3, the latest
versions. Zodb storage is the default since 1.1a2 was released last April.
We've been much too long in alpha test for 1.1, but we collectively are
short on time. If you decide to upgrade your feedback would be much
appreciated. Given that your current database is corrupt I'd just toss it
instead of trying to convert it from dbm to zodb.

Ok, thanks. I wasn't aware that there was a 1.1 alpha out there yet. How
dangerous is it to run 1.1a3?

Do either dbm or zodb require other support, e.g. other packages I need to
download and install?

Charlotte, if you mean the SpamBayes Outlook plug-in, uninstall
in the usual way:

Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs - SpamBayes n.n.n

This does not remove the training database, so if you want
complete removal you'll have to go in and delete the
folders/files left behind.

But you'd be much better off getting it working.

What's the problem? Do you have Delete As Spam and SpamBayes
buttons on the Outlook toolbar?

Configuration is under the SpamBayes button.

If having trouble please ask specific questions so we know where
to point you. Sometimes it's better to uninstall and start again.
At the first start of Outlook after a clean SpamBayes
installation, SpamBayes should automatically enter a
configuration phase. But you can still configure it through the
button as mentioned above.

There are a couple of items in the FAQ that may be
useful:

http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/faq.html#the-recover-from-spam-button-no-longer-appears
http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/faq.html#i-get-a-message-that-says-i-need-to-enable-spambayes-or-the-enable-button-is-greyed-out

There's also a troubleshooting guide for the Outlook
plugin. It's available from the SpamBayes button, but I gather that isn't
displaying. You can read it online at http://spambayes.cvs.sourceforge.net/*checkout*/spambayes/spambayes/Outlook2000/docs/troubleshooting.html.

[Spambayes] Help - unable to set up Spambayes

2006-08-10 Thread Jonathan Hughes
Title: Message

Hi there - I used to
work with Spambayes some months ago - it worked beautifully - and I'd gleefully
see my junk-filled Inbox evaporate before my eyes.

All well and good
until one day it just stopped dead - stopped functioning. (and didappeared, I
think off my Outlook toolbar.)

I am now looking to
embrace Spambayes again - and am having some difficulty getting to the point
where I can see 'Spambayes' on my Outlook.

I have run the
set-up wizard... I keep then expecting to 'run' kickstart the program by
clicking on the icon - and perhaps see the Installation wizard - but I just keep
gpiong back to the set-up wizard...

(I THINK I've got
this the right way round)

If you can offer any
support I'd be hugely grateful

Many
thanks

[Spambayes] Help with a specific issue

2006-08-07 Thread R. Lee Davis / ESPmagic Productions
Hello! First, I am really computer ignorant, and I don't like to play with
things I don't understand, so I thought I'd ask the experts:

I keep receiving spam to an address that doesn't exist
([EMAIL PROTECTED]), and I wondered how I can set Spambayes to send all
emails that come to this address directly to the junk email folder. Is there
a simple method to do this? I couldn't see the way when browsing the FAQ
page...

Thank you so much for your help!

[Spambayes] help??? Spambayes has left the building?

2006-07-25 Thread Paul Wilner

I have been using Spambayes 1.ORc1 (the version seems to be
0.992) with Microsoft XP (home edition) and Outlook.

It has been successfully filtering email since I put it in,
until yesterday. Now messages that used to be filtered are not, and
nothing is being put into Junk or Junk Suspects folders.

The system (from Control Panel (add/remove etc) tells
me that I installed and Last Used it on 12/06/04 even though
Im pretty sure I have used it several times a day.

The Spambayes drop down arrow on the toolbar
in Outlook does not drop anything down.

I was tempted to uninstall and then reinstall, but after
reading the troubleshooting guide
I realize that I am sufficiently in the dark to beg for help first!

I will appreciate ANY ADVICE

Thank You

Re: [Spambayes] Help! Deleted by accident

2006-07-22 Thread Tony Meyer
I recently emptied my junk email folder and then realized I needed
something in there. I can’t find the deleted items—it’s not in my
email’s trash or on the web server trash, or my desktop recycle bin.

Any ideas how I can get this back?

This is really an Outlook question, not a SpamBayes one (SpamBayes
just moves messages between folders - there's no difference between
deleting a message that SpamBayes classified as spam and any other
message).

If it's not in the Outlook Deleted Items folder, then it may not be
recoverable. If the message was in a local Personal Folders (pst)
file (not an IMAP server, Hotmail, or Exchange) then if you haven't
compacted the PST file, there are utilities that can recover
messages (Google will find them).

:-( :-( :-( :-( :-( (Try the link above and see what you get.)

Here is my problem in a nutshell:

Whom it may concern,

I have been using SpamBayes for a while and think it is great, but
recently it quit working properly. It is no longer filtering emails
(they just go into my Inbox, and sit there. I cannot even manually
'delete as spam' them.), nor can I access any way of trying to control
SpamBeyes. The file download I used to install it contains only an exe.,
and does not have any separate documentation file. I have tried
uninstalling and reinstalling it several times to no avail. Although,
there is still a SpamBayes button at the top left of my Outlook window,
I cannot click on it and get any response, nor are there still buttons
to move messages to, or recover them from the spam folder.

I would really like to get SpamBayes working again, but I am at a
loss as to how to go about this. Could you please let me know of any
suggestions you might have for doing this. I am running Windows XP Media
Center, and Outlook XP client fed from and Exchange server. Please let
me know if you know how to resolve this problem! Thanks for your
urgently needed help!

[Spambayes] spambayes help needed: the Outlook toolbar is gone

2006-05-23 Thread desh
To whom it may concern,

I have been using the SpamBayes Outlook plugin for a long time without any
problem. Recently, after an unclean shutdown of the computer, SpamBayes
stopped working: filtering didn't happen, and the SpamBayes buttons on the
Outlook toolbar were there, but didn't function at all.

I uninstalled SpamBayes, and per the instructions, deleted the toolbar. I
then downloaded the latest Windows installer and installed it. The
installation seemed to work, but the SpamBayes toolbar is nowhere to be
found, and I am not able to add it via the Outlook toolbar configuration
memo. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling multiple times, without
success.

Do you have any idea how to fix this problem?

The computer is, I believe, running Win XP Home. Outlook is the 2002
version. I'm not sure of the old version of SpamBayes, but the new
version is 1.0.4.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
