I was trying to install prevu on Intrepid on an amd64 setup. It failed
with error messages as reported above.
The apport stuff appeared but I do not know if an error report was
generated and mailed out.
I tred to uninstall the packages with apt-get remove --purge but all the
packages were not

Sorry for the sloppiness. I was trying to understand what happened while
I filed my comments.
I think the cause of this problem is my installation of TeXLive 2008
from DVD. That has put the GNU version of install-info before the Debian
install-info. For more details, please see:
I removed the symlinks from /usr/local/bin including that of
/usr/local/bin/install-info and the problem has gone away. I can now
install gettext and all packages needed by prevu, which itself has been
successfully installed.
Perhaps this error message occurs after non-Debian-package
.

I installed it with English, pre-selected as default.
Typing locale at the console gives:

I have experienced identical behaviour.
A complete re-install of Kubuntu Gutsy has not helped.
I have filed
Bug #175909 in kde-systemsettings
because this bug is marked closed.
The messages on console when the Administrator Mode button is clicked are:

and solved that year. It has re-surfaced and has also been reported
again by Rohan Dhruva on 30 Nov 07. I can confirm what he has siad at:
Typing
sudo kcontrol
from the console enables administrator tasks to be accomplished. This is
a workaround. There are error messages about uid being 1000 when it
should be 0, but it works.
kdesu kcontrol
fails with error messages.
This means that the system is usable now.

This is a Linux-oriented question.
I am writing a script that may be executed by a user with admin privileges, if
required, on a root-userless K/Ubuntu system. I want to make sub-directories
under a parent using sudo with the same UID as the parent directory. I am also
