Re: Unrealized loss

2018-04-04 Thread David Carlson
If there was some way to search for or display transactions that contained
a non-zero exchange rate in one or more of it's split lines it might be
possible to track this down.

If the OP had made a typo years ago and corrected it but GnuCash left some
garbage it would not be easy to find. I suppose that he could try Check
and Repair All to see if it makes a difference.

The fact that " setting the calculation mode to "average" or "nearest in
time" " makes a difference suggests that there may be more than one
transaction with a non-zero exchange rate and on different dates.

One other place to look is in the chart of accounts choose View > Filter by
> Other and check Show Hidden Accounts. Then make sure the Commodity
column is shown and click on it two or three times to see if any account
has a currency other than his base currency. If so, that would be the
place to look.

Re: Error when editing Scheduled Transaction

2018-04-04 Thread David Carlson
Oh... I sometimes don't bother to put the curser back into another field
and hit Enter before clicking the OK box. Usually, that does not matter
because it just triggers a cannot balance type of error which is easy to
override by clicking OK again. Thanks for the help.

George,

GnuCash is now using GTK3 so it's all changed - here's some info posted by
Geert a few days OK which might help you do what you want...

Fwd: Error when editing Scheduled Transaction

2018-04-04 Thread David Carlson
The Trace file error that I think matches is:

* 17:30:21  CRIT  [gnc_split_register_get_trans_split()] bad
row
* 17:30:21  CRIT  gnucash_sheet_cursor_set_from_table:
assertion 'gnucash_sheet_cell_valid (sheet, v_loc)' failed

Where does the bad row come from if I only have three rows in this
transaction?

Subject: Error when editing Scheduled Transaction
To: Gnucash Users

in Getdeb Release 2.6.17 in Ubuntu 16.04. The message popped up when I
tried to save a change to a scheduled transaction and the wording
is"Invalid Account in Split" "Split with memo has an invalid account"

All three accounts in the transaction are existing but this message pops up
when I try to save

Re: Importing qfx files, version 3.0

As noted in the release notes that feature is known to not work per
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=793461.

It is not known exactly when that will be fixed.

Re: GNUCash 3.0: Report Printing problems

2018-04-04 Thread Adrien Monteleone
I would think page size could most definitely affect breaks and flow of the
document on the page. If there is less room for the content it has to flow to
the next page. Though it is possible most reports are sized to at least A4, so
you might not see any change and those using Letter would see different breaks,
or if they are hardcoded, just more whitespace. I would also suspect font
choice and size will affect this as well. (but if you’re copying to Excel, it
won’t matter anyway)

I’m not a developer, so I can’t comment on the time-frame for direct printing
issue. As for better reporting, it is sort of a cart-horse thing. There’s
little point going through extensive effort to change the reporting mechanism
until the app is a proper database which will allow for MUCH more flexible and
customizable reports. This is why the devs have said it’s not on the top of the
list. Top of the list is mostly behind the scenes changes to the base code so
improvements like better reporting will be much easier to implement. They have
a goal and a plan to get there, but reporting by necessity has to fall later in
the scheme. (and if you understand the reporting mechanism, yes pun intended)

Note, there is a tool called Piecash which parses the XML that you can then use
in custom reports. You could also save the file using the SQL or SQLite
backends and query your data for reports. (just don’t write to the file without
using the official API) There are also Python bindings available. Do a search
for them here on the list, or check out the wiki ‘outside projects’. (or
labeled something similar)

Adrien

Re: Error when editing Scheduled Transaction

2018-04-04 Thread Adrien Monteleone
I was able to duplicate your issue but only if I didn’t enter through after
deleting the copied memo. That is, leaving the extra split line there and
hitting OK, produced the error. But when I hit enter after deleting the memo to
‘advance to the next transaction’ just like in a register, the extra split line
disappears since it is empty, I then hit OK and there is no error.

Register Font Size in Version 3

2018-04-04 Thread GEORGE HAMMOND
Hello,

I am using gnucash 3.0-1 on a 2011 iMac running OSX 10.13.4. I was previously
using gnucash 2.6.7 on the same machine and OS .
I Changed the font size in the register using the following code …

style "font"
{
  font_name = "Sans 14"
}
widget_class "*" style "font"
gtk-font-name = "Sans 14”

And saved it to a file named .gtkrc-2.0.gnucash which was placed in my home
directory. It worked fine in the previous version, but now does not work with
version 3.0 of gnucash.

This code and file name were from the gnu cash FAQ on the gnucash site.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Unrealized loss

2018-04-04 Thread Adrien Monteleone
But the OP specifically said he doesn’t deal with stocks or any other
investments. So there should be no such added prices. (and technically, those
would be manual inputs via the transaction, just not via the Price Editor) As
far as I’m aware, GnuCash doesn’t just grab prices from online without being
told to in some fashion.

Re: Unrealized loss

2018-04-04 Thread David T.
Adrien,
Gnucash places an entry in the price db when you create a buy or sell
transaction.  This ensures that certain reports behave, I recall.
As this issue has been discussed previously and at length, I would hesitate to
file a bug until the experts weigh in on the esoteric aspects of unrealized
gains in gnucash.  Currently, those experts are putting out bigger fires.

Re: Error when editing Scheduled Transaction

2018-04-04 Thread David Carlson
It seems that the error happens if I copy some text from one of the
existing three split memos and paste into the extra split memo box below
the three existing split lines then delete that text without touching the
other boxes in the extra split line before saving the scheduled transaction.

I am fairly certain that I have used that extra memo field several times
before when I wanted to swap memos between split lines in an SX. If I
added a split memo without a corresponding split account and left it there
before saving I would expect a warning to enter an account, but not if I
deleted the memo before trying to save the edit. There is nothing visible
to delete and I do not want to add an account for a non-existent memo.

Setting Environmental Variable AQOFX_LOG_COMM

2018-04-04 Thread Shyam Acharya
Hi

I tried setting environmental variable AQOFX_LOG_COMM to 1 to debug a
connection problem. However, I am unable to generate an ofx.log. I am using
Windows 10. Two questions:

  1. In addition to setting the AQOFX_LOG_COM value to 1 is there anything
else that needs to be done? (ie setting path)
  2. Where does GNUCash generate the file? Can I create a tmp directory in the
desktop? If yes how do i point GnuCash to this directory.

Thanks!

Re: Unrealized loss

2018-04-04 Thread Adrien Monteleone
I certainly didn’t advocate filing a bug on this. I think more sleuthing and
answers are needed.

Yes, I understand the db gets an entry on a buy/sell transaction, but if you
don’t have buy or sell transactions?...

And to be clear, those aren’t ‘automatically downloaded.’ They are the result
of the transaction math.(perhaps the OP wasn’t expecting them to appear, but
they really have to if the account is to be kept correct and reports work out
properly, as you noted) We’re not talking about GC downloading new prices each
day/month/week without being told to do so.

I’m at a loss with this thread because the OP hasn’t made clear that there
aren’t any buy/sell transactions of anything. They claim they don’t use any
currency other than EUR and don’t track stocks. The trading accounts could
still be enabled, and a commodity added to the assets. And if this occurred on
more than one date, well, then certainly, there will be more than one price in
the db.(each one generated by GC as a result of the transaction)

But the OP has been silent on these questions, so it’s probably best to wait
till he chimes back in to continue the guessing any further.

What we don’t know is:

Is he seeing this unrealized gain/loss without ANY prices AT ALL in the db? And
without ANY other currencies other than the default book currency in play?(EUR)
And without ANY assets denominated in ANYTHING but EUR? And without ANY stocks,
funds, et cetera?

Until all of those answers are ‘yes’ I don’t think there’s a bug at all, but
rather, either a transaction that is hard to find, or a user misunderstanding.

Regards,
Adrien

Re: Price Editor/Database lag

2018-04-04 Thread DGPickett via gnucash-user
I discovered my vm.swappiness=60, dropped it to 10 as recommended for desktop
LINUX. Now no si/so on vmstat, but a peak in cs and a moderate delay,
around 20 seconds, when adding price quotes.

Again, it looks like it is using too big a RAM space to manage this data, or
some similar process inefficiency. I would think a properly keyed tree
container would be good, allowing you to look up a symbol and then pull the
tree in key order from that point. Perhaps it force-saves after every
modification?

That’s AQBanking stuff, so you might try their mailing lists. In general
Windows puts logs in the user’s AppData/Local or AppData/Roaming depending on
which way the user id is configured.

Rich,

The newest file *should* be personal.gnucash.20180403092939.gnucash;
personal.gnucash.20180403092939.gnucash.20180403125159.gnucash should be the
previous version from the last save.

Yes, you can rename any of the .gnucash files to personal.gnucash and then use
File>Open to open it, then clean out the directory of the backups. The next
time you open GnuCash 3.0 it will offer to delete the missing files from the
MRU l list.

mechanism for it.

John,

  I use the default backend; 'file' shows it as a compressed Unix file;
perhaps gzipped xml?

Every midnight cron runs dirvish for incremental backups.

What's interesting is since I loaded the business.gnucash file yesterday
and everything displayed as it should, the list of files in the business
subdirectory includes business.gnucash (which opens the current state of
that account) as well as several .gnucash and .log files from yesterday's
activities. For example, business.gnucash.20180403104944.gnucash and
business.gnucash.20180403104944.log. So, the business account works as
expected.

On the other hand, the personal account can be loaded by specifying only a
'personal.gnucash.*.gnucash' file. When I open personal.gnucash I get an
empty display with no CoA or anything else. Specifically, the recently
opened file list shows 'personal.gnucash.20180403092939.gnucash'.

I suspect that I can rename one of the datetime stamped files to
personal.gnucash, and clean up that subdirectory. I would appreciate your
thoughts on this.

Having just opened gnucash, and shut it down, these are the files in the
personal/ subdirectory:

gnucash-coa.gnucash
personal.gnucash
personal.gnucash.20180402112722.log

personal.gnucash.20180403104006.log
personal.gnucash.20180404053709.log

  The newest log file is
personal.gnucash.20180403092939.gnucash.20180404053716.log while the newest
.gnucash file is
personal.gnucash.20180403092939.gnucash.20180403125159.gnucash.

Gnucash 3.0 Microsoft Security Essentials Threat Detected

2018-04-04 Thread km22
Hi,

When I try to download Gnucash 3.0 I get a Microsoft Security Essentials
(MSE) threat detection which then deletes the file.

Screenshot:

Is there a way for the developers to have this file correctly
categorized/assessed by MSE?  It is worrying to see these pop-ups (and
probably the first time I have seen one and hence why I want to be very
careful.) What is the best way for a user to self-assess (i.e. confirm
the file is not a real threat) and proceed with the download/installation?

Thanks,

Ken

Re: Importing Quicken

2018-04-04 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
Alen,

What you’ve done with the Benefits section is better, but I still feel that any
mention of benefits of migration is misplaced here. Someone looking for ways to
migrate from Quicken presumably has already come to this conclusion.

* I have edited the tips portion further. I added a tip regarding the whole
Categories/Accounts paradigm.

* I modified your tip regarding import of categories only, since it isn’t
strictly necessary.

I think it’s useful here to note that I didn’t have to either import the
account structure or individual accounts separately when I imported my large
QIF file way back in the dark ages—I simply exported everything in one big QIF
and did the import from that. That was when I discovered the holes in my
Quicken data. I chose to go back in to Quicken, fill in those holes, and
re-export the entire file again, repeating until I had a clean enough import to
move forward. I know that others have had a different experience.

* I modified the tip about multiple currencies to more accurately reflect the
situation and make it clear that the problem isn’t with GnuCash, but with QIF.

Cheers,
David

Does the QIF importer detect duplicates created by transfers within the

No, 1.4M, even compressed, isn’t terribly large. My main database is about 7M
compressed, 53M uncompressed.

There are a couple of open bugs on a similar problem, one of which, bug 782144
, has a long chain of things
we’ve tried to isolate the problem. You should probably read that before you

Re: GNUCash 3.0: Report Printing problems

2018-04-04 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Welcome to GnuCash Steve!

I just caught up on a thread about W10 printing issues. It seems the problem
has indeed carried over to the 3.0 series. (and still exists in 2.6.x)

As long as you can then print that PDF, it’s an extra step, but you aren’t
locked out of printing.

Unfortunately, looking at your questions in 2-4, you might need an extra few
steps anyway.

There’s no need to export first, you can simply select-all and copy/paste your
report into Excel, and use that to format your printout with desired
page-breaks, paper size, and footer.

Directly to your #3 - Check in File > Page Setup. You can set paper size and
orientation there.

You can’t directly control page breaks, but you can change page orientation and
you can adjust font-size by editing the stylesheets or creating your own
stylesheet. However, you’ll likely have to alter this by trial and error and
then do so each time the report changes. (not very time efficient)

Likewise, you can customize the Footer stylesheet to your needs which will
allow you to print a footer on the page. There are some variables to use in
some places but I’m not sure if page-number and page-count are included in
these or if they’d even work in the footer. You might have to create a custom
report. (which would be even more trouble)

The easiest way to get all requirements is to copy/paste and format in Excel as
noted.

Please note, a proper reporting system is on the wish list, but it’s going to
be well down the road until after core parts of the app are rebuilt,
particularly, the transition to a true database app. Till then, we can always
use our favorite spreadsheet for custom and ‘pretty printing’.

Regards,
Adrien

Re: Importing Quicken

2018-04-04 Thread David T. via gnucash-user
When I did my import (over a decade ago, I believe), I had no problem with
transfers. Since I was importing all in one pass, there were no duplicates
created by transfers.

I believe the duplication problem you describe specifically arises when you opt
to import transaction data from individual accounts separately, since you have
to tell the importer when a given transfer is already in the system from the
other side. It’s precisely why I think it should NOT be the “preferred” way of
importing from Quicken, since it forces the user to manually identify the other
side of a transfer every time. That makes my head hurt just thinking about it.

This is why I chose to run the Export-Import process iteratively, until I got
the Quicken data massaged to my satisfaction. Then the imported data was all
good.

Most of the challenge had to do with random category variations, and
uncategorized transactions—which you well know will end up in IMBALANCE-USD.

Re: Unrealized loss

2018-04-04 Thread cageda
I suspect there is a bug that should be reported:

As I do NOT manage currencies other than EUR and no traders accounts taking
into account share values, I have deleted all exchanges rates that had been
updated automatically by GC without my noticing.
BUT my Unrealized loss on a given day varies according to my setting the
calculation mode to "average" or "nearest in time" for instance. It doesn's
seem to make sense since there are NO exchange rates in my system.

Ideas?

Alain,

Your new transaction is balanced, and won't affect the imbalance in another
transaction.

I personally find the unrealized gains issue to be exceedingly difficult to
understand. Since you say you don't care about this, just ignore it.

“Cancelling” isn’t really the right term. You need to record the loss as either
expense or negative income depending on how you handle capital gains. There’s
an explanation of how to do this in [ [

I have identified the day on which the unrealized lossed first appeared. I have
drawn a transaction report for that day (and the day before). There is no
transaction that can remotely explain the loss.
I do not handle foreign currencies. Regarding shares I do not use trader
accounts or split transactions including profits or losses. I do not enter
share values into GC until the day I sell them. There is no way in the meantime
GC can take into account a difference in value.

Something might help identify where the problem comes from: I had another
instance with an unrealized loss as big as my total yearly income. It went away
a few weeks (or months I'm not sure) after it showed up. There is no way a
single transaction (or even a few ) on a particular day triggered an unrealized
loss as big as my yearly income.

What I would like at this stage is simply set GC NOT to SHOW unrealized
losses/gains. No legal problem as I'm only managing my personal familyaccounts.

TIA for you help
Regards
Alain

I tried the following:
C an equity account "Unrealized loss" : EUR 7.70
D an income account "Realized loss" : EUR 7.70
The total Equity remained the same - 7.70
I changed the signs and the total equity remained at - 7.70
I don't get it.

TIA
Alain

Assets and Liabilities most certainly can have different totals. The difference
is Equity.

With GnuCash you have the option of letting it calculate the unrealized
loss/gain and retain the flexibility to run custom reports, or, lose some
reporting flexibility and periodically (through the close-books procedure)
formally recognize that gain or loss to an Equity account. (that is, gain/loss
as a result of Income - Expenses, not from sale of assets, that should be done
at the actual sale)

Re: Unrealized loss

2018-04-04 Thread D via gnucash-user
Alain,

If you have different lots of a commodity (for example, you purchase additional
shares of a mutual fund), I believe that the price of the new purchase can
affect the calculation of unrealized gains for the rest. Gnucash can determine
a new value for your previous shares, and identifies an unrealized gain. Or at
least, that's my meager understanding. As I said before, I find this issue very
confusing, and not so long ago, I was the person insisting that there was a
bug. Maybe there is, but I couldn't figure it out.

Then you say there are NO rates in the system.

Which is it?

If you open the Price Database is there anything at all listed in the window?
(this includes a Currencies tree)

Do you have ANY transactions where you purchased or entered an opening balance

If you go to File > Properties, is ‘Use Trading Accounts’ checked?

The value will usually change based on that setting. Sometimes ‘latest’ and

Alain,

Your new transaction is balanced, and won't affect the imbalance in another
transaction.

I personally find the unrealized gains issue to be exceedingly difficult to
understand. Since you say you don't care about this, just ignore it.

Hello.

I have have had an "unrealized loss" showing on my balance sheet for years. I
haven't bothered too much as the amount is extremely small. (€7.70).

I had kind advice on this forum as to identify the date on which the loss
showed up and the procedure to cancel it. I did find the date but stangely not
the transaction. So I'm not going to keep trying to cancel the loss any longer.

I read that, without actually "cancelling" the loss, it is possible to prevent
it from showing. I know that this is not legal for a company, but my book
keeping is fully personal so I'd like to know the procedure.

“Cancelling” isn’t really the right term. You need to record the loss as either
expense or negative income depending on how you handle capital gains. There’s
an explanation of how to do this in [ [ [

Re: GNUCash 3.0: Report Printing problems

2018-04-04 Thread Dave H
So I should be able to run a report such as the Balance Sheet and then
click on the printer icon to print it on one of my physical printers ?
Currently all that happens is that it wants to save it as a pdf - doesn't
seem to be an option to send directly to the printer ?

GnuCash 3.0, Mac High Sierra 10.13.4 so perhaps not just a Win10 issue ?

Re: GNUCash 3.0: Report Printing problems

2018-04-04 Thread Christopher Lam

Hi Steve

2-4 can be easily solved by File > Export > Export Report to file, and
opening the file in a modern web browser for printing.

The report generation code exports to HTML natively, but is limited by
the webkit implementation used. A modern web browser will obey the html
rules better.

Hi all,

GNUCash newbie here.

The problems I am having are:

1. I can only print to PDF – no option for real printer use. I understand
this is a problem with GNUCash on W10, so I’ll let that go.

2. If I create a PDF report it splits whatever is at the page break across
the pages. For example the top half of a text line will be on the bottom of
page 1 and the bottom half of the text on page 2. How do I make it page break
at the end of a line?

3. Australia use A4 paper, but I can’t see where the PDF page size in
GNUCash is set up. One Report needs to be in A3 landscape, and currently I have
to export it to HTML, into Excel, reformat and then print it. Is there a way
of setting the PDF print properties for GNUCash?

4. I want to add a report footer that has “Page x of y” in for my
multi-page reports. How do I do that?

Thank you everyone – be gentle

Re: GNUCash 3.0: Report Printing problems

2018-04-04 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Since reports are PDF and direct printing of PDF was not working with WebKit2,
the change was made to redirect File > Print and the Print button to instead
export to PDF for now and the export button was removed since it was duplicate
functionality. See this bug: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=787018

Re: GNUCash 3.0: Report Printing problems

2018-04-04 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Perhaps I’m reading that bug report wrong. It may be that the solution
implemented inadvertently removed direct to printer output. It seems webkit2
can’t ‘export to pdf’ not that it can’t print at all. (how do Safari and Chrome
print PDF then?)

Or maybe I’m just not understanding the issue and how GC produces on-screen
reports.

But yes, I can’t print direct to a real printer either via File > Print or the
Print button on 10.13.4 either, so not just a Windows or W10 problem.

Adrien

RE: GNUCash 3.0: Report Printing problems

2018-04-04 Thread Steve Parry
Hi Adrien.

Thanks for your prompt replies to this and the subsequent comments from others.

Re #3 (page size) - I'm not sure from my testing that this affects the PDF
output, maybe it's only the hysical printing formatting (when it is working
again!)?.

Regardless, it does seem that the copy and paste to excel may be the most
expedient way of formatting. I'm writing VBA Macros to auto format my common
reports. Thank you for the tip about copy and paste rather than go through the
HTML step

Re page numbers in the footer, I haven't found any variable for that, but as I
will now be going through Excel that's not required.

I suggest that financial reporting is a very high priority, and having that as
an integral function of GNUCash will be a huge timesaver globally amongst your
users

Thanks again for your guidance.

Cheers

...Steve

Subject: Re: GNUCash 3.0: Report Printing problems

Regards,

Adrien

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes and no - printing the HTML directly or via PDF puts in multiple page breaks
- eg blank page, heading, page break, report body, page break.

I'll stick to the Excel solution for now I think

Hi Steve

2-4 can be easily solved by File > Export > Export Report to file, and opening
the file in a modern web browser for printing.

The report generation code exports to HTML natively, but is limited by the
webkit implementation used. A modern web browser will obey the html rules
better.

Hm.  Seems to me that a price is added to the system any time a

First, you say you deleted all rates updated automatically by GC without you

Then you say there are NO rates in the system.

Which is it?

If you open the Price Database is there anything at all listed in the window?

Do you have ANY transactions where you purchased or entered an opening balance

If you go to File > Properties, is ‘Use Trading Accounts’ checked?

Alain,

Your new transaction is balanced, and won't affect the imbalance in another
transaction.

I personally find the unrealized gains issue to be exceedingly difficult to
understand. Since you say you don't care about this, just ignore it.

I read that, without actually "cancelling" the loss, it is possible to prevent

fully personal so I'd like to know the procedure.

GNUCash 3.0: Report Printing problems

2018-04-04 Thread Steve Parry

Cheers

…Steve

Re: Importing Quicken

2018-04-04 Thread Alen Siljak
Hi, David,

You are right. I've removed the benefits section but kept the fact about open
data standards. Apart from being a benefit (to me), it is also a consequence of
migration that may or may not be important for users.

Yes, that's probably true. However, if an application interprets a transfer in
such a manner that it takes 100 Euros from one and then deposits 100 AUD into
another account without warning the user, that's a big no-no for me.

Thanks for the feedback!

Re: gnucash 3.0 crashes opening accounts file

2018-04-04 Thread pjlbyrne
Thanks John - I expect puttingin proxy configuration won't be too difficult.
I will have a look later.

BTW I got the exact same crash running gc3 at home, opening the same
accounts file. Perhaps it is related to the accounts file. I have been using
gnucash for some years now, my file is 1.4MB in size - is that considered
large?

Anyway it means I can debug it at home now, when I have the time.

Regards
Patrick

Re: Re: GnuCash 3.0 Released

2018-04-04 Thread Thomas Bray

Good morning John,

The Github download link for GnuCash's 3.0 release is incorrect on the
page/mailing list email below:

https://lists.gnucash.org/pipermail/gnucash-user/2018-April/075866.html

(Sorry, I'm fairly new to FOSS and don't quite know the terminology/how
best to let you know)

The listed Github Win32 link is (incorrectly) listed as the following:

"Download GnuCash for Win32:
https://github.com/Gnucash/gnucash/releases/download/3.0/gnucash-3.0.setup.exe;

The valid direct link for the download is instead:
_https://github.com/Gnucash/gnucash/releases/download/3.0/gnucash-3.0.-setup.exe_
(note the extra hyphen between "3.0." and "setup."

I'm excited to try out GnuCash; have a great day!

Best,

Thomas Bray
