The former is based in African folk traditions, the latter AFAIK in largely Irish traditions relocated to the American south (with the noted addition of the African Banjo). > Rock n' Roll...then you have Jazz to Raggae, etc. You're missing a couple key ingredients here: Swing+Motown=Ska Ska begat Reggae once equipment got cheaper, and Jamaican cops came down on the clubs (sound familiar?). And Western cultures are not completely without rhythm. The drum is core to almost all traditions. Celtic, Native American, etc. Why all this struggle to compartmentalize? It's a glorious soup.
