With the mix I did, the bulk of it was recorded on the fly, but the nature of the beast is such than when you listen back to the mix and notice little areas which you'd like to tighten up or otherwise enhance, it's really hard to resist the tempation because it is basically so easy to do! It helped that I had had the general concept of the mix knocking about in my head for years beforehand, so a lot of the track selection I had already decided upon before I started.
