All down to space on the front panel, you can set the gain while you're cueing up and shouldn't need to tweak it, whereas the EQs, sends, filter etc. all need to be closer to hand while in the mix. Before I got a Xone 32 I thought it was a stupid place to have the gains, but after a week or so of getting used to it I've never given it another thought. It's just a great sounding well built piece of kit.
