I think my problem is that isn't always the case anymore. When I saw him in Brighton in Nov/Dec the first half of his set was fairly bland, despite following a Harvey-esque DJ. Like I said, he made up for it, but maybe a little too little a little too late. That said, reports of his set in Kings Cross last year were nothing short of stunning.
