I think many in the Australian media are fascinated with the reception The
Avalanches have generated overseas - some get it, some don't. I don't.
They're OK. I guess Chuck D was onto something some years ago when he wanted
to sign them to his label.
The Avalanches are part of a movement here called skip-hop - a hybrid form
of Australian hip-hop (Skippy was the name of a popular Australian 50s/60s
TV show about these kids and their pet kangaroo, Skippy). Australians rarely
come up with original things, but they are damn good at collage, taking
different elements and throwing them together. We have a colonial history,
yet in many ways we are caught between America and the UK culturally, and
then we are also part of Asia economically and have a significant
geo-political role in the Pacific. I think you see this same kind of
irreverent cross-cultural mish mash in Aus director Baz Luhrmann's movies -
Romeo & Juliet and Moulin Rouge. I think of all the skip-hop outfits The
Avalanches are the best - The Resin Dogs are terrible - but there is other
music that is not exposed. I think skip-hop has been successful as unlike
underground hip-hop or urban music - which is kinda scary to Anglo
Australians over 35 - it fits in with the old Anglo love of rock 'n' roll
and pub music in this country. The DJ Dexter is a genius (he nearly took out
the DMC title) and actually there were plans for him to support Herbert here
cutting up old Herbert records (not sure if this went ahead as I missed that
gig).
I have to say I am amazed at how larrikin these guys are in the UK press as
I have spoken to Robbie Avalanche a couple of times and he is so quiet and
shy my taperecorder can never catch his words. I think they are having fun
taking the p** out of the UK media myself.
