Basically the Linux is many things to many people on many different architectures. This is really hard and mistakes happen as a result. No one else can touch GNU/Linux in terms of supported hardware (netBSD is close, but dieing a slow death). Of course this comes at a price, in that specific areas from time to time suffer (such as our precious RT kernel). If this is a problem, then again, there are alternatives.

It does make sense from the kernel developers point of view who do not necessarily share our point of view. Some view this situation as a weakness, still others a strength. Either way it is what it is and users have a choice. Do keep in mind that you are new here, and are still trying to figure out why things are the way they are.
