I've played around with keyboard mappings too, but eventually concluded that nothing else is going to be faster than the conventional layout. One thing I have found useful though is to use the ctrl and alt modifier keys to get octave shifts. An option in BarFly causes ctrl-A to give a' and alt-A a''. With the shift key down as well you get the lower octaves, so shift-ctrl-A gives A, and shift-alt-A gives A,,.
(The ctrl key is not used for menu equivalents on the Mac, we've got another
key for that.)
