or, maybe better:

I think that one could have the same effect of your V: extended syntax
by using setdrum without a note specification:
V:1
[I:setdrum 42] cdeGAB % percussion sounds
[I:setdrum reset] cdeGAB % normal notes
The only problem I see is some possible confusion: was the drum map
cleared really? If so, temporarilly or definitely?
