It's early roots were in Mission Critical's SeNTry (before they called
it OnePoint) which was a pretty cool idea in it's day. SeNTry had
add-ins for products like Exchange, IIS, CIM etc that wrapped some
intelligence around mining the event log entries said apps generated and
taking action on them. In those days NetIQ's AppManager did little to
nothing with event logs so it was kind of a logical progression the way
it all morphed together eventually.

MOM was purchased by MS from NetIQ--correct. I believe MOM grew out of
the monitoring product that NetIQ acquired from Mission Critical
Software called OnePoint. You still see the OnePoint name littered
throughout the MOM setup and install. Kinda takes me back to SMS 1.0,
when the install and product had references to "Hermes", the product
that begat SMS. And yes, it was pretty scary running SMS 1.0...

It does need a little mothering, yes, and it is probably overkill for a
smaller firm. Isn't MOM an offspring of NetIQ?

And I work with the Exchange Management Pack mostly.
