believe it or not there are those that prefer PD to Max/MSP arguing that
Max/MSP is too visually dominant. i dislike both interfaces, but choose PD
over max for a few reasons:

  1. it runs on my operating system, whereas Max doesn't.

  2. PD will run on any major operating system; great for collaboration.

  3. Max/MSP costs money and is closed-source; unweildy for collaboration.

  4. PD can open Max patches, not vice versa (AFAIK).

  5. it seems much more interesting development is being done in PD these
days: it's where the fun is.

  6. i can build a sound-server in PD and run it in no-gui mode, which
is simply excellent for installations - it runs in the background.

there is a lot of reasonable documentation out there for PD, it's just
not in one place. admittedly this can be fairly frustrating.

here however is a good starting point.

better still wait for the flossmanuals contribution from Derek - this
will probably be the most useful beginning point for new users (outside
of a workshop itself of course).
