I just bought a 20" 1600x1200 resolution LCD monitor from Dell that showed
up on my doorstep yesterday. I've only worked on it a day, but I have to
say: these things have come a long way in the last year. I'm extremely
happy with it. The color is rock solid and completely adjustable, as is
(through my video card) gamma, brightness, and contrast. I've found a
balance that I quite like. And viewing angle is no longer a factor: it
looks the same from any angle.

This monitor has been great for the video work I've done thus far, and I
don't think I'll be going back to my CRT. For what it's worth, I got this
on the recommendation of an extremely finicky photographer who's now doing
all his Photoshop work on it. As for cost, I got mine for US$560. It's
normally $750, but Dell regularly has sales. (Be sure to check the same
item by checking in through the "home" link and then the "small business"
link. They often have different prices for the same item.)

I think there are two key things to consider:

- Today's LCD technology is far, far better than it was even a year or two ago.
- Always use a video monitor (as David Hurdon suggests) for final viewing.
Video on a computer monitor, no matter how good, never looks right.
