<<Thank you to all that replied. I did decided to stick with the CRT;
however, the selection is very slim. I narrowed my choices (of what I could
buy locally) to a KDS, Samsung, or Viewsonic 19" monitors. I bought the
Viewsonic A91f+ from BestBuy yesterday. However, I can't get the refresh
rate set to virtually get rid of the "flicker". I am very sensitive to the
flicker on monitors - my husband doesn't notice it, but I really notice the
eye strain after a very short time. My previous monitor was a Dell
Trinitron 21" and I could sit for hours in front of it and never had any
trouble.
Any suggestions? What's a good CRT that has little flicker or do I shell
out the big bucks and get one of the newer LCD 19" w/1600x1200 resolution?
My projects are getting behind schedule so I have to find a good monitor
soon.>>
----Some of your problems with flicker have to do more with the card that is
driving the monitor than anything else.
For instance, my PNY Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 card has infinitely variable
flicker reduction.
What model video display card (VGA card) do you use with your Viewsonic?
Also, different VGA cards will offer a wider variety of refresh rates, but
it's important to make sure that you don't "force" the monitor to use a
refresh rate that it's not capable of, and to that end many cards offer the
"dont display refresh rates that this monitor cannot support" box in the
setup.
If you have properly loaded the drivers for your Viewsonic this should not
be a problem.
Viewsonics DO support a wide variety of refresh rates, usually all the way
up to 135 Hz on MOST models, if your VGA card offers it.
Also, since you used to have a Trinitron, you're now seeing HORIZONTAL
raster instead of VERTICAL.
Sony Trinitron is unique in that it utilizes a vertical scanning method
instead of horizontal, that is, the lines are scanned vertically across the
screen whereas all other CRT's scan horizontally from left to right.
I might be incorrect on this and perhaps someone more knowledgeable might
steer me straight but I was always under the impression that this was the
basis for the Trinitron design, that being the unique scanning method
employed by the electron gun in the Trinitron design and the fact that a
Trinitron uses a single gun instead of three separate ones.
In my experience I have had the best luck with the Viewsonics...I'm
currently using two G790's on this edit system.
