HD VMD! It's baaaaack! Constellation 3D's Fluorescent
Multilayer Disc (FMD) technology has resurfaced for a
3rd time, after going nowhere as DMD (Digital
Multilayer Disc) from the company that bought C3D's
assets and patents.

What's different now that it's called HD VMD? (High
Definition Versatile Multilayer Disc) There's actually
players available to buy, and movies- and they all
cost much less than either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.

Why it costs less is because the FMD technology uses
red lasers instead of the more expensive blue lasers
the others use, and the discs have multiple, clear
layers that fluoresce in response to slightly
different wavelengths of light. Thus the reader
mechanisms from existing standard DVD technology work
just fine with only changes to their firmware.

Currently the movie selection is as small as the other
two had at their debut, but is expected to grow. As
for capacity/quality, it slots right between the other
two formats. (If they really wanted, it could be
better than both the other formats, but that'd take
more layers in the disc.)

If only C3D had followed this path from the start
instead of expecting the world to beat a path to their
better mousetrap, when they weren't part of either the
Empire (DVD Forum) or the Rebel Alliance (DVD+RW
Alliance)... What I figured they should've done was
find a DVD-R/RW drive that was easy to convert, bought
a large number of them, developed a recordable disc,
then sold the drives bundled with a couple of blank
discs. If they'd had that on the market, it would've
kicked the props out from under HD-DVD and Blu-Ray
before they ever got on the market.
