Many things, musical and otherwise were created in the 19th century. The term masters still originates in the guild system, with the old masters governing workshops. Renaissance painters worked in workshops, with apprentices and craftsmen painters with an older master painter who consigned them work and governed their practices. I see that William has given a more detailed account than I, and with enough imagination to encompass pre-19th century usage. Among the things that were created in the 19th century was the music that eventually became known as jazz, first as hot jazz. The mythic sounds of Buddy Bolden are sometimes evoked as the initial renderings of jazz. Toodle-pip. Allan.
