The highly logical, imaginative and creative jazz musician Thelonious Monk
composed a wonderful piece out of cross purposes, titled Criss Cross. I
think I gave a link to a recent performance of that piece in an earlier
email. Perhaps that was the one that you so kindly listened to and found
wanting for some reason or other though. Then again you could have listened
to any one of the other performances linked in that email, pot luck.

The performance of Criss Cross linked to was by the Dutch improvising group,
the Instant Composers Pool, an obviously informative name. With the end of
the piece the cross purposes of Monk's composition are not reconciled, but
the adventure and curiosity of the music produced of the tension between the
cross purposes and harmonic variation are among the wondrous outcomes. Criss
Cross can be thought of as a music of the Spheres. Then again if one of the
purposes was highly selectively pursued alone much less would come out of
the music and performance.

Toodle-pip.

Allan.
