We use Mikrotik routers for operational reasons, they are however IMHO
overpriced and don’t have stellar WiFi.

Our standard CPE router is the hAP ac. They have less expensive options like
the ac2, I just don’t particularly like them. We used to offer the ac Lite for
$2, but nobody liked them including me, it doesn’t help that they are so tiny
nobody takes them seriously. Hey, what do you expect for $24/year? We don’t
get too much demand for mesh systems, and those people usually want the fun of
picking out and buying one themselves. But they often present unsolvable
interference problems at our 5 GHz customers. So we do offer the Mikrotik
Audience system, 2 or 3 units as needed for WiFi coverage (in-building, not for
reaching outbuildings).

I wasn’t asking because I wanted to do what you do (shirt slogan? “Don’t do
what Ken does”). I was just curious what hardware you use. I don’t like the
sounds of just recovering your upfront costs after 2 years………

You don’t want to do what we do. Most people here say to use Calix. I think
that’s an easier decision if you’re going to do it across the board.

But my rule of thumb is I want to recover my hardware cost in about 24 months.
There’s additional labor cost and shipping or delivery cost on top of the
hardware, plus labor to keep them updated, and to replace them if they fail.
Plus a certain number we don’t get back, and if we do, they are often not in a
condition I’d want to redeploy to a new customer. I assume cable companies
have a whole operation to clean up and refurbish cable modems they get back,
even to the point of putting them in a new case. Sometimes they are really
dirty or the case is chipped, sometimes they reek of someone’s perfume and you
can’t stand to be in the room with them.

But back to the cost, if I buy a router for a little over $100, I want to lease
it for at least $5 a month, and at that I figure I’m just breaking even.

What do you use for each option?

$5 router, $10 mesh.

I don’t get a really high take rate, so you could argue I’m charging too much.
On the other hand my customers are really really cheap, for a couple years I
offered a cheapo router for $2 and that didn’t change things much. Unless it’s
free, they figure if they buy their own, they will eventually come out ahead.
Occasionally I find someone still using a WRT54G.

What are you guys charging for a residential managed router, if you're not
including it in the price of service (mandatory)?
