I have triple physical route redundancy out of my C.O.

And I am a tiny guy.

I'm not even saying target buildings. If you simply targeted lots of rural
fiber handholes and some power transmission lines across the country or even
just a single state, you can do some real damage. One fiber cut takes 4 to 24
hours to repair depending who owns it, how close the contractor is, etc. If you
own the fiber and have your own gear it might take 4 hours. If it's Zayo,
expect 16+ hours typically.

But if you put a small bomb in multiple hand holes along major fiber routes, it
could take days to fix everything. And taking down power lines, again multiple
ones, could take days to restore power for people. This would cause mass panic.

How do you time a CME? I guess you can jump into action with the pre-impact
warning of 1-2 days?

You don't need a terrorist to take out the satellites. One well-timed CME

Never thought about that. Yo get the data center back up. But your fibers
all down. In 5 places. But you only find out once you get one back together.

Yeah. We’re safe because no one has done it. Not because we’re safe.

I've thought about how vulnerable the entire US power and
communications grid is.

It would be so easy to cut multiple long haul fibers, plant bombs at
large power transmission lines and then sync it all together to explode, cut
things at the same time. It could easily be done in rural areas only but still
affect metros since they all feed from rural power and fiber lines.

There's also no cameras or as many people monitoring things in the
middle of nowhere. If this was done over multiple states and targeted multiple
grids and fibers, you could almost knock out 90% of all power and
communication. This would hurt more than any single location attack.

What happened in Nashville has actually been a concern of mine for
some time.

Look at 9/11. Huge loss of life yes. But that took a lot of effort
and planning and getting through security and learning to basically fly a
massive tin projectile.

How much more damage could a small group do with 5 or 6 vans loaded
with explosives in a coordinated attack on say: NYC, 401N Broad, Ashburn, St
Louis, Chicago and San Jose?

Throw in a few major CO switching offices in some major towns.

You’ve caused mass disaster. Minimal planning. And now with 911
services out and data crippled you could do something else even more major.
