The one I used for years and years was just high speed steel.

I have a drill doctor, but that seems to only get them a few more drills. I'm
thinking i need to find one with a carbide tip or somesuch. One of my
installers found one on amazon a year or 2 ago, but they aren't there anymore,
and calling the manufacturer, they had stopped making them.

Yep, it is pretty pointy. 118 degrees is pretty common for mild steel. Wood
is typically 90 degrees.
Pretty easy to repoint a drill bit if you have a decent grinder and a nice
flat stone on it.
I am sure there are dozens of you tube videos that show you how to do it.

But like Daniel says, Drill Doctor takes all the difficulty away.

For the cheap Home Depot ones we had a bit sharpener (I think it was a Drill
Doctor) that would work pretty good. I feel like I was more likely to lose the
bit than for it to go dull.

We've been getting the installer drill bits at the local big box store.
The 1/4"x18" bit with the hole in the flute to hook the wire on and pull back.
They are cheap, and have the lifespan to show. Drill a couple aluminum siding
houses and it's time for a new one. I'm looking to get them higher quality
ones. They seem hard to locate at other distributors. Am I calling them the
wrong thing? I was searching for either 'bell hanger bit' or 'installer bit'
I found some on Amazon, but they are probably about the same quality as the
bigbox ones.

I found one at Grainer that is backordered several weeks, and I haven't
found one at McMaster yet. Am I calling them the wrong thing?
