single mode should also be fine... 

FWIW... here is what to check.. 

Check the receive sensitivity of the SFP in use.. and make sure that the 
received signal is at the very least 4db higher good range is 6db higher than 
rx sensitivity., 

2nd thing to check is .. How much light you are Tx and how much you are Rx. 
check on both sides, and you difference is the loss in cable + Connector... (TX 
- RX) on one side should be pretty similar to (TX-RX) of the other side... 
otherwise you have some cable or connector issue. (dirty or not seated properly 
or possible bad). 

When you see TX in the +1 or higher range or you start seeing RX in the range 
of -2 or higher then you need attenuators to bring the signal down, otherwise 
you are going to burn out the optics... (FYI.. the attenuation is normally put 
in on the RX side... ) 

There are some crazy carriers who sometimes use ZX Sfp's to hand off fiber 
connections inside the data center.. (these are high power optics designed to 
to 60-80km, they can put up to +5 or higher power !).
